That maybe… if I’m patient.

Lottie will one day be mine.

Just as I am already hers.

Chapter 34

Nathan

When I wake up the next morning and see that Lottie is nowhere to be found, my heart plummets. I run my hand over her side of the bed, the cool bedsheet serving as a reminder of how my world is just as bare and cold without her in it.

Last night, she let me in, giving me a small taste of what my life could be like with her by my side. And now that I know how sweet she tastes, how her body comes alive with just the sound of my voice, there is no way I’ll ever be able to go back to my grayish existence. Not without a fight.

But to do that, I can’t mope around this room. I need to find her. I must tell her that last night meant more to me than she could possibly realize. That it was everything I could have ever hoped for, considering the peculiar circumstances we find ourselves in. Yes, making out with another man’s woman isn’t exactly the honorable thing to do. But something tells me she hasn’t been his in a long time.

If he was too much of a fool to know Lottie’s worth and just let her slip through his fingers, it’s his fucking loss. Like hell I’llever make that mistake. I’m very aware that a woman like Lottie doesn’t come along very often. And I intend to remind her every day just how grateful I am that she’s even spared me a second glance.

But is that all this is?

Just infatuation?

Lust?

Or do her feelings run as deep as mine?

Get up, asshole.

You won’t get your answers just lying in bed all day.

With new resolve, I get out of bed and jump in the shower, eager to find out what Lottie truly feels about me. Once I’m done, I get dressed and hurry downstairs in search of Lottie.

Unfortunately for me, she’s not the first person I end up finding.

“Lee,” I greet as I walk into the kitchen.

“Wilder,” Piper retorts, holding her coffee mug in her hands. “Well, this is going to take me a hot minute to get used to.” She smirks. “There’s some hot coffee in the pot, and the mugs are in the second cabinet to your right if you want any.”

I give her a nod and try not to stare at my usually stern-looking sports agent, astounded by how different she looks when she is not wearing her power-play suit. Her long blonde hair falls freely down her shoulders instead of being tamed into her usual ponytail or bun. Her face is free of any make-up, making her look softer somehow. However, it’s the Christmas-themed sweater she’s wearing that really has me gobsmacked.

“Is that a reindeer?” I goad, pointing to her sweater.

“You think this is funny?” She arches a brow.

“If I say yes, are you going to hit me or something?” I ask apprehensively since I wouldn’t put it past Piper to cut off my junk and then gift wrap it as a Christmas present to herself just because of my light teasing. As I keep reminding Caleb when hepushes her buttons, a mad Piper Lee is nothing to joke about. The woman can be downright frightening when she wants to be.

“Laugh it up all you want, Nathan.” She smiles mischievously, her gaze darting behind me. “You see that bag right there?” She points to a bag left on the counter. “That’s your sweater. It’s a Moore family tradition. Everyone has to wear one for Christmas.”

I stare at the bag, my chest feeling tight all of a sudden.

“They got me a sweater?” I rasp out, stunned.

I walk over to the bag and pull out a sweater with Santa Claus. My throat tightens, and my vision blurs as I stare at it, completely overwhelmed that the Moore family would consider including me in such a tradition.

“You okay there, Nathan?” Piper asks, unable to mask her concern.

“I’m fine,” I stammer, feeling a sting at the corner of my eyes.

“Well, put it on. It won’t bite.”
