“The thing is, I’m more afraid of you than I am of her.”

“Of me? Why?” She frowns.

“Because only you can break my heart. Only you, Lottie.”

Her gaze scans mine hurriedly as she begins to understand the agony I’ve been living in for far too long.

“Lottie, I lov—”

But before I have time to say the words burning away at my soul for what feels like forever, Lottie covers my mouth with both hands, stopping me from telling her how I truly feel.

“Don’t say it.” She shakes her head furiously. “Don’t say it, Nate. Not when I can’t say it back.”

Ever so softly, I grab hold of her wrists, pulling her hands away from my mouth and binding them behind her back so her chest is flushed against mine.

“Do you want to say it back?” I ask, feeling like my heart is about to explode.

“Yes,” she confesses on bated breath, her eyelids becoming hooded.

“But you can’t because you don’t want to taint this before it’s even had a chance to begin.”

She nods on a whimper.

“Then I’ll wait. I’ll wait for as long as you need me to. But make no mistake, Lottie. When you finally become mine, I’m never letting you go.”

Our eyes lock together, the electricity in the air palpable to both of us. Our breathing hitches as our bodies melt into one another, desperate to become one. The way she looks at me, so desperate for me to kiss her, is maddening. But just as I’m about to lean in and give her exactly what she wants, someone knocks on the door.

Not someone.

My cockblocking sports agent.

“Hurry up in there. There are only so many excuses I can make for you two being locked inside a bathroom,” Piper grumbles, annoyed on the other side of the door.

Damn it.

“We should go,” Lottie says, unable to hide her disappointment.

“We should,” I agree, keeping her locked in my grasp for just another second.

But when Piper knocks again, reminding us of the entire house that awaits us, I let go of her bonded wrists and lean into her ear instead.

“Tonight,” I whisper, watching how that one word sends a delicious shiver down her spine.

“Tonight.”

And with that sweet promise falling from her lips, tonight can’t come fast enough for me.

Chapter 35

Charlotte

I sit on the porch steps, watching Nate play touch football with my family on the beach. Piper sits beside me, punching away at the keys of her phone, pulling my attention from the picturesque view.

“Please tell me that you aren’t working on Christmas,” I tease, nudging my shoulder with hers.

“If I did that, then I’d be lying to you. And I never lie to you.”

“Just the rest of the world.”
