“There must be an explanation for this,” I mutter to myself, opening the last thread of text messages.

“There it is. Cooper’s an even bigger prick than I gave him credit for,” Piper says with a snarl beside me.

I shake my head incredulously and write him a text.

Me:Cooper, we need to talk. You can’t just ignore my calls.

My chest tightens as I see him typing his response.

Cooper:Have you come to your senses?

I take a fortifying breath and text back.

Me:I have. I think we should end things now before we start resenting each other.

Cooper:No.

My eyes almost pop out of their sockets from reading his reply.

Me:You can’t just say no, Cooper. We have to be adults about this.

Cooper:I am being an adult about it. You’re the one who is acting like a spoiled child. Call me when you start making sense. Until then, don’t bother.

“Motherfucker is holding you hostage,” Piper sneers, having a front-row seat to my humiliation as she reads his texts.

“I don’t know what’s gotten into him. He’s never acted like this,” I utter in disbelief.

“Babe, he’s always been this way. He sure didn’t make an effort to hide it when you weren’t looking.”

Cooper’s last words come to the forefront of my mind.

You and I are end game.

Is that all I am to him?

A pawn in his selfish game?

“I don’t know what to do,” I confide in my best friend, completely at a loss on how I should proceed. I don’t want to be tied to Cooper any longer, but it’s evident he won’t let me go without a fight.

“That’s okay, Lottie. Because I know exactly what to do.” Piper smiles sinisterly.

“I hate it when you get that smile on your face. It means you’re up to no good.”

“Oh, I’m not the one who’ll be up to no good.” Her grin widens. “I brought something for your dad, and now I’m thinking you’ll make better use of it.”

My forehead wrinkles at her change in topic.

“I don’t understand,” I retort, confused.

“Oh, you will.” She smiles mischievously. “Christmas isn’t over yet, and I think Nate has one more gift to unwrap.”

After making sure that everyone is asleep, I sneak out of my room and walk downstairs to Nate’s room. This idea of Piper’s is a bit insane, but it will hopefully have the desired effect I’m looking for.

When I reach the guest room, I can’t help but smile when I see that he’s left his door ajar. Ever so carefully, I sneak inside, locking the door behind me just in case.

“Lottie? Is that you?” Nate whispers, the room too dark for him to see me.

“Were you expecting someone else?” I tease with a soft chuckle.
