Coop’s hand reaches out to my neck, grabbing it so tight that my windpipe threatens to cave in.

“Cooper,” I wheeze out, my nails digging at his hand, trying to break free.

“Tell me I’m wrong? Tell me you didn’t quit on us because you fucked that hockey player?! Tell me I’m wrong?!” he shouts maniacally, his alcoholic breath churning my stomach.

“You’re… you’re… hurting… me.”

“I’m hurting you?” He cackles. “You ruined me! Destroyed me. You don’t know what pain is, Charlotte. But you’re about to find out.”

And with that threat hanging in the air above us, he releases his grip from my neck, only to slap me so hard on my cheek that I stumble to the floor. The room sways around me as I try to breathe, too dizzy from the lack of oxygen and still numb from his slap, leaving me unable to get up from the floor fast enough. Before I know it, Cooper is on top of me, brutishly shoving half my face into the carpet while his remains inches away from mine.

“I’ll show you, Charlotte. I’ll show everyone that they can’t just fuck me over like this and expect me to take it lying down. Nuh huh. The only one here who’s going to get fucked is you,” he jeers in my ear before slobbering his tongue on my cheek.

“Get off me! Get the fuck off me, Cooper! Help! Help!” I shout as I struggle to break free, only to have him hold up my head and bang it to the floor.

Everything turns dark for a while, and when I come to my senses, I feel his filthy paws run up my bare thighs. He kicks my legs apart and pins me to the floor, leaving me unable to move.

“You’ll see. You’ll all see you can’t fuck me over like this,” he continues to mutter in my ear.

I choke on the bile that rises in my throat while doing everything I can to wrestle him off me. My eyes sting with hot tears as I curse and shout for him to get off me.

But it’s not my voice that rings out.

It’s Nate’s.

“GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF HER!!!”

Nate grabs Cooper and swings him across the floor, releasing me from the monster who tried to hurt me in the most despicable way. I quickly backpedal away and reach Wallace, who shows up at my side to help me get up on my feet.

“It’s okay, Miss Moore. The police are on their way,” Wallace explains, looking pale as he wraps his coat around my shoulders.

But I’m too out of it to realize what he’s said.

Instead, I watch in a foggy daze as Nate pummels his bare knuckles repeatedly on Cooper’s face until it no longer looks human. All I see is blood, flesh, and bone. It’s only when Cooper’s body remains motionless that the horror in this room begins to make sense.

Nate is going to kill him.

He’ll do it without remorse.

Because he hurt me.

Because he tried to…

And even if the part of me that is still in shock with what just happened wants this, I can’t let it happen.

Because if I do, then Nate will be taken away from me.

And then Cooper wins.

He wanted to break me.

If Nate is taken away from me, then that’s exactly what I’ll be—broken.

He doesn’t get to win.

“Miss Moore,” Wallace pleads as I walk over to my love. My heart.

“Nate,” I whisper, placing my hand on his shoulder. He throws another punch, Cooper’s remaining teeth flying every which way. “Nate? Baby? Look at me?” I beg softly, falling to my knees beside him.
