“Guess you won’t make it to this Saturday’s game, asshole. I had money on The Guardians beating Chicago’s ass. Thanks a lot,” the cop holding onto my shoulder reprimands.

I turn over to him and give him my best sardonic smile.

“I’ll make it to the game. Don’t you worry about that.”

“I wouldn’t count on it. The guy you beat up looked pretty bad to me. I doubt he’ll make it before the paramedics can take him to the hospital,” his buddy chimes in.

“Good.” I grunt unremorsefully.

“Stop talking, Nate,” my girl reprimands with fear in her tone. “He didn’t mean that,” she tries to explain to the officers.

“I do mean it,” I tell her, my head awkwardly tilting back just to get another look at my love. “I mean every word. He had it coming. I’m just sorry I didn’t get enough time to finish the job.”

“STOP TALKING!” Lottie shouts, eyeing the police officers in terror. “It’s the adrenaline talking. He didn’t mean it. Please, if you let me explain, I can clarify all this up for you. Please, just stop and let me tell you what happen.”

“Sorry, Miss. We have to take him downtown to be booked and processed. I suggest you get your friend a good lawyer.”

“He’s not my friend. He’s my fiancé and you best believe I’ll get him the best lawyer this city has,” she bites back.

My little firecracker.

My ride or die love.

“Nate, promise me you won’t say another word. I’ll get you out of this,” she promises, uncaring that tears are still streaking down her face.

As the police usher me into the elevator I take one long look at my girl.

If I do go to jail and the judge locks me up and throws away the key, it will be all worth it.

She’s worth it.

“Miss, please stand back,” one of the cops’ orders when Lottie tries to come into the elevator with me.

Reluctantly she does as he says and stands back, her gaze instantly finding mine. We just stare at each other, our words lodged in our throats by being physically torn apart.

“I love you,” I choke out, needing her to know it, since I’m not sure when I’ll be able to say it again to her face.

“I love you, too. So much. We’ll get through this. I promise you, Nate. We’ll find a way to get you out of this mess.”

But as the doors begin to close on her beautiful face, dread begins to assault all my senses.

What if I can’t fix this?

What if because of one fucking asshole putting his hands on the wrong woman, not only steals away my future as a hockey player, but also any future I could have had with the girl of my dreams?

How the fuck did I get here?

Oh, that’s right.

It all started with a fight.

Chapter 1

Nathan

No matter how long ago it was, some moments in your life make you feel like you’re right back in the principal’s office and that you haven’t evolved shit.
