He shakes his head.

“Okay. What was the longest relationship you had then?”

He shifts in his seat, looking like a fish out of water.

“These are standard questions, Nate. I need some insight into your romantic past to conclude if you are a good fit to be a client or not.”

“I… um,” he hesitates for a minute before answering me. “I had a girlfriend in college once. Does that count?”

“It does.” I smile warmly, hoping to ease his discomfort. “And how long did that relationship last?”

“A month.”

“Only a month?” I arch a curious brow.

“Hmm.” He nods. “If that,” he adds.

“And why did it last only for a short period of time?”

“Girls usually don’t like it when guys don’t prioritize them,” he admits sullenly. “Hockey always came first for me. Even more so back in college. I needed to ensure I was drafted to one of the big teams, so that didn’t leave much room for anything else.”

“And I’m guessing this girlfriend of yours didn’t appreciate being placed second behind your hockey aspirations?”

He shakes his head.

“I see,” I retort calmly. “Was she the only relationship you had?”

He nods.

This all feels like I’m pulling teeth, but at least he’s being honest.

“Can I assume that your previous experiences have only been one-night stands, then?”

When his cheeks turn crimson, it takes everything in me not to melt into my seat.

A man like him, blushing?

I would never have pictured it if I didn’t see it with my very eyes.

Again, he nods, refusing to vocally answer me.

“Can I ask you another question?” I press on, always keeping my tone evenly calm and soothing to avoid spooking him.

Something tells me Nate is a runner.

“Go ahead,” he replies gruffly.

“If I take you on as a client, will you continue prioritizing hockey above everything and everyone in your life?”

He thinks long and hard about my question, which I appreciate.

“I guess it all depends,” he finally replies.

“On what?”

“On the woman.”

Again, it’s an honest answer, even if not a pretty one.
