“I have this one teammate… Jack. He’s the team’s captain… well… I see him with his family. How much they love and support him.”

“Okay,” I chime in when he looks like he’s struggling for words.

“I guess… well… I guess it would be nice to have that.”

“A family?”

He nods.

“Are you saying you are ready for marriage and children?”

“Jesus Christ,” he grunts, exasperated, running his fingers through his hair. “When did we skip from finding me someone to date to making babies?”

“That’s what families usually consist of, Nate. And by your awed description of your friend, Jack, I’m inclined to believe that is your end goal, even if you’re reluctant to acknowledge it.”

“Hmm,” he grunts.

“Use your words, Nate. Is that a yes?”

He lifts his eyes back to me.

“Yeah.”

“That I can work with.” I smile triumphantly, happy that we’ve finally touched on something real. Something that makes him a good candidate for Love Moore.

Nathan Wilder is a little rough around the edges, but he has potential.

Something I’d never thought myself thinking of him, but there you have it.

He might just be a diamond in the rough.

Nothing a little polishing and some one-on-one care won’t remedy.

“I think that’s enough for one day, Nate. Give me a few days to give your case careful consideration, and then I’ll reach out to you. How does that sound?”

Like a flash of lightning, he’s up on his feet, ready to bolt out the door.

Yep. Definitely a runner.

“So, we’re good here? We’re done?”

“For now, yes.” I grin.

He grunts his goodbyes and starts making his quick getaway, but then surprises me when he stops mid-way, just to turn around to face me once more.

“I’m a good guy, Charlotte. I know it might not seem like I am with what everyone is saying about me, but that shit isn’t me. I’m not some violent asshole who gets his kicks hitting people at bars.”

No grunts.

Just his truth.

I don’t say anything in return, patiently waiting to see if he has more to say.

“I gotta be honest,” he starts, “I’m not sure if this shit will work either. But I’m willing to try. That’s all I ask of you, too. That you give me a chance.”

“Noted.”

There’s a small slump of his shoulders as he gives me a curt nod before turning around to walk out the door.
