“You’re pretty good at this dating stuff, huh?” I ask, trying to divert the subject and get my head out of the gutter.

“I hope so. Otherwise, I’m in the wrong line of business.” She laughs softly again.

“So you’ve probably seen just about everything that comes to dating.”

“Pretty much,” she explains, with a hint of curiosity in her tone. “Why do you ask?”

“Has… I mean… is there such a thing as love at first sight?” I ask, my cheeks heating in embarrassment at the nonsense that is spilling out of my mouth.

Where the fuck did that come from?

Kill me now.

To her credit, Lottie doesn’t tease me for the outburst and actually considers my question.

“No, not really. Lust at first sight, sure. But not love. Love takes time. You need to build a solid foundation for love to last. If you rush it, then it will not be able to withstand the challenges life throws at it. You can’t build that in the first few seconds of meeting someone.”

“Right. Of course,” I mumble, feeling like a damn fool for even asking such a thing.

“Don’t worry, Nate. You can’t catch feelings on a first date if that’s what is troubling you,” she adds, thinking that’s what’s worrying me.

“Yeah, okay.”

“I bet you get that a lot, huh?” she adds sullenly, the sadness in her tone coaxing me to stare into her eyes, which look more blue than gray tonight. “Women fawning all over you just because you play for the Guardians. I promise I won’t set you up with anyone who shows signs that they are in this for the wrong reasons or who hasn’t been vetted by me personally. Okay?” she says, giving my hand a comforting squeeze.

My throat constricts at the simple touch, but against my better judgment, I don’t pull away.

I wait for her to do it instead.

Even though she just confirmed my suspicions that love at first sight is total nonsense, I can’t help wondering if her expertise on love might be faulty in that regard.

But what do I know?

It’s not like I’m good at this shit, either.

If I was, then I wouldn’t need her help.

“Now, how about we throw some axes?” she says in a more upbeat tone.

“Sure. Why the fuck not?” I shrug.

Maybe she’s right.

Maybe I’m just suffering a hot-for-teacher moment.

It’s only normal for a red-blooded male like me to be attracted to her.

But that’s all it is.

Attraction.

Nothing more.

And the sooner I get that into my thick skull, the better.

I mean, how the fuck am I supposed to find theoneif I’m pining after my matchmaker?

That’s just setting me up to fail.
