“Am I okay?! You almost made the kid piss his pants,” he replies, looking impressed. “You really are a little firecracker, aren’t you?” Nate chuckles beside me, making all the tension in my shoulders disappear when I see that he’s no longer trying to make himself invisible.

Not that he ever could pull off such a trick.

“I just don’t like it when people mess with my friends. That’s all.” I shrug.

“We’re friends now?” He arches a brow.

“Aren’t we?”

He nods, but when he blushes, my heart—lord have mercy—stops beating.

God help me.

“Okay, is there anything else that you need?” I ask, needing to regain my focus.

“No. I think I’m good for a few weeks.”

“Good. In the meantime, I’ll make a few calls and see if I can get you another housekeeper by the end of the week. You shouldn’t have to deal with jerks while grocery shopping.”

“Thank you,” he says, and I can tell he means it wholeheartedly.

“Not a problem. Now, let’s get these paid for and back to your place.” But just as the words leave my mouth, he pretends to cough to hide his chuckling.

“What? What did I say that was so funny?”

“Nothing. Just getting used to the idea of you coming over to my place tonight.”

“Don’t you want me to?”

“Fuck yes. I’m all for it. Just never thought you were the type of girl to go back to a guy’s place after only a few dates.”

“Are you messing with me right now, Nate Wilder?” I laugh.

“Little bit. Yeah.” He blushes, making my heart pitter-patter in my chest.

Oh, gosh.

I’m in trouble.

“Well, we have been dating for a month now,” I play along. “A girl can only hold off for so long.”

“I… um… what do you mean,” he stammers for a second until sense falls on him like a ton of bricks. “You’re fucking with me, huh?”

“Little bit. Yeah,” I joke.

“Funny,” he grumbles.

“I thought so.”

“If this matchmaking thing doesn’t work out for you, then you should consider stand-up,” he grumbles as we head towards the checkout, but when I hear him chuckling under his breath, I know that it was all in good fun and that he’s not one bit annoyed by my light teasing.

Mind you, in a parallel universe, if Nate and I were really dating, I doubt very much I’d wait a month before climbing his tree trunk of a body. I probably would have jumped him on our first date.

But we’re not living in a parallel universe.

We’re living in this one.

The one where I have an aloof boyfriend, and Nate is paying me to find his perfect match.
