Nate is not only lonely, but he’s also a man starved of affection—craving genuine and unconditional love.

This leaves me to question how a sports legend like him has been bereft of such a thing his entire life.

But that’s not the only thing that unsettles me.

It’s the truth I’ve been trying to hide from myself since the very beginning.

His sadness speaks to me because I feel it, too.

I just hide mine better.

Chapter 20

Nathan

Life might be kicking my ass right now, but there is one silver lining to all the bullshit I have to put up with.

And that’s spending time with Lottie.

I don’t even care that Coach Byrne is always on my case at practice or that Trent Nichols pops up every now and then on my afternoon coaching sessions. I don’t even care that the fans boo me in every game or that the press is still talking shit about me.

None of it matters.

Not when I get to spend quality time with Lottie at the end of the day.

Lately, a day doesn’t pass when we’re not together, and frankly, I don’t mind it one bit.

Although I do question what type of moron her boyfriend is, if he’s okay with her spending all her free time with another guy instead of having her all to himself.

Idiot.

But hey, I’m not complaining.

Not one little bit.

It’s his loss.

And my gain.

“Let me guess? Another fun date?” I tease once I realize she’s taking me to the batting cages tonight.

“You know it!” She beams proudly, strutting away like she knows exactly where she’s going.

God, she’s cute when she gets excited.

There’s a kid waiting for us at the entrance, eyeing Lottie up and down like she’s an angel sent from above.

I get it, kid.

Even I have a hard time looking away.

“Party of two, please?” Lottie jokes as if we were about to step into a fancy restaurant rather than being there just to hit some balls with a stick. “Our reservation is under the name Moore.”

The boy glances over to me and visibly begins to shake in his pants.

Fuck.

“This… this way,” he stutters, urging us to follow him.
