Hell no.

But for Lottie, I’d do just about anything.

Anything to keep her smiling at me like she is now.

Chapter 21

Nathan

“Motherfucker!” Caleb grunts, pulling up the front part of his mask just to shoot daggers at his brother. “Cheap shot, asshole!”

“Don’t be snoozing on the job, and I won’t get anything past you,” Jack taunts, slapping Caleb upside the head.

Caleb growls in discontentment, shoving his mask down, but not before flipping his brother off.

“Looking good there, Wilder,” Coach Byrne yells from the sidelines.

“Yeah, Nate. Thanks for the assist,” Jack praises. “Now, how about you keep at it so we can fuck with my baby brother a little more?” He grins.

I chuckle and nod.

Though everyone is practicing hard for next Saturday’s game, seeing the two Donovan brothers go at it is always fun.

Jack flies like the wind on his skates while Caleb watches his every move, not wanting to be blindsided by our team’s captain scoring again. Sweat drips down my forehead as I mirror Jack’squick movements towards the goalpost down the opposite side of the rink.

Caleb looks ready for him, but Jack doesn’t look intimidated.

He has other plans.

In a split-second decision, Jack slaps the puck my way, and I instinctively strike it with all my might, finding the net right between Caleb’s feet.

“Goddamn it!” Caleb shouts, pissed.

“Oh, stop being such a crybaby,” Jack teases.

“Fuck you,” Caleb mumbles.

Just listening to the two go at it, you would think they hate each other’s guts, but that’s just their competitive nature speaking. We all know that nothing could ever come between the two brothers. Not even their constant bickering.

“Okay, boys. Wrap it up. Good work,” Coach Byrne announces, calling an end to our practice.

As I start to skate past Jack, he places his hand on my shoulder, stopping me from going any further.

“Hey, you busy after this?”

“Got the rugrats to coach this afternoon, but I’m free until four. Why?”

“Erin wants me to take you back to my place for lunch. You up for it?”

“I could eat.” I nod.

“Good.” Jack then turns toward his sulking brother, who is trailing behind us. “You can come too.”

“Geez, thanks.” Caleb rolls his eyes.

“Don’t be a sore loser. You did good out there today,” Jack states proudly.

“You got five pucks by me. That isn’t good. That’s fucking bullshit,” Caleb mumbles.
