“Coach Byrne’s idea of therapy is a good one,” she finally says. “It will show that you recognize you have a problem and that you’re taking action to solve it. That will buy you some goodwill from the fans, but it won’t fix it completely. We need something else for the media to focus on. Something that will pull people’s attention away from that stupid video. Did Coach Byrne suggest anything else to you?”

“He just told me to keep my head down and stay clear of situations and places with people that might set me off. He even suggested I get a girlfriend or something to keep me busy. Like any woman would want to date me now after seeing that fucking video,” I reply, adding sarcasm to the last part.

When the line grows quiet again, my frazzled nerves are all but shattered.

“Will you be at Jack’s baby girl’s christening this Saturday?” she asks completely out of left field.

“Yeah. The whole team was invited,” I reply suspiciously.

“Good. I’ll be there, too,” she retorts, sounding a bit more chipper. “Give me until Saturday to come up with something, and we’ll talk about it then.”

“And if you can’t?”

“Have I ever failed you before?” she retorts with a smug tone.

“Notyet,” I grumble, emphasizing the word yet.

“The answer to that question is no, Nathan, and I don’t intend on starting now. Let me do my job, and you keep doing yours. Do as Coach Byrne told you and keep your head down. And for the love of God, stay home. I don’t want you to go out to any more bars in the foreseeable future. Is that understood?” she orders with a no-nonsense tone.

“Yeah, okay.”

“Good. We’ll talk soon,” she says, hanging up before I have time to offer a reply.

I pinch the bridge of my nose, my migraine fully settled around my eyes and at the sides of my temples.

How the fuck did I even get in this mess?

And most importantly, how do I get out?

My whole life is now in the hands of my sports agent.

Piper better deliver.

Or we’re both fucked and out of a job.

Chapter 3

Charlotte

“We’ve got another winner!” Becca squeals in excitement as she bursts into my office, holding the largest bouquet of white lilies I have ever seen.

I stand up from the seat behind my desk and rush towards her.

“Oh, my gosh, these are beautiful!” I exclaim, admiring the flowers after she places the crystal jar with the gorgeous bouquet on my desk.

“You know what’s really beautiful? This!” Becca gushes, handing me the envelope attached to the thoughtful gift.

A large smile forms on my lips as I pull the card from the white envelope and see those magic words that always have my heart fluttering—save the date.

“Jaqueline Bordeaux and Thomas Livingston formally invite you to their wedding, blah blah. He did it! He proposed to Jackie!” I laugh in utter glee, pressing the invitation to my chest.

“That must be a world record for us,” Becca says after I hand her back the card to add to our prized collection of weddingannouncements. “I mean, how long have they been dating? Three months?”

“Two, but who’s counting?” I continue to giggle as I walk back to my desk, feeling absolutely giddy that they found love so quickly. “I knew they would hit it off. They are perfect for each other.”

“Soulmates, even,” Becca coos, still ogling the exquisite flowers.

“Now, Becca, you know how much I despise that word,” I chastise with a playful smile. “Relationships are hard enough. Couples don’t need the added pressure of being someone’s soulmate.”
