“Well, at least you know now. Better late than never, I always say. So, what are you going to do?”

“What do you mean? Didn’t you hear me when I told you she’s been avoiding me?”

“So what?” Rex retorts as if it shouldn’t be an impediment.

“So, it’s kind of hard to win Piper’s heart when she won’t even talk to me.”

“Then I guess you have to get creative. Take it from me, son. Every minute you waste wallowing here is another minute you lose with your woman. If I could get back all the minutes I’ve squandered in anger or self-pity when Martha and I were fighting just so I could instead devote that time to being with her again, I would do so in an instant.” He snaps his fingers to drive the point home. “Time is precious, son. Don’t waste a minute of it.”

“I’ll think about it,” I mumble, too drunk and depressed to register his warning.

“Make sure that you do.” He smiles, forlorn, giving me a gentle tap on my shoulder before standing up from his seat. “Well, best be heading home. Need a ride?”

“No. I’ll leave in a little while.”

“Did you come by town car, or did you drive here in your Aston Martin?” he asks, concerned that I’ll be dumb enough to get behind the wheel in the current state I’m in.

“Nope. I got a driver.”

“Glad to hear it. Get some sleep, son. I promise you in the morning, everything will be clearer to you.”

“I hope you’re right. Goodnight, Rex.”

“Goodnight, kid.” He smiles. “Oh, and I wouldn’t be too worried about losing your job either.”

“Oh, yeah?” I chuckle despondently. “How do you figure?”

“Well, I might be selling the club to him, but only enough shares for him to have the majority vote on the board. As I see it, he only needs fifty-one percent for that. The other forty-nine, I can do whatever I want with it. Even give it to my general manager. Though I guess he could still fire you, as the majority shareholder. I guess it’s a good thing I’m going to include a bylaw in the contract that prevents him from doing so.” He winks, leaving my jaw agape.

I shake my head, watching him walk out like he didn’t just floor me with that revelation.

Not only am I not going to be out of a job, but Lawrence will have to deal with me as his other owning partner.

Well, what do you know?

Maybe I won’t lose my job after all.

Now, if only I could get the girl.

Chapter 19

Trent

Instead of heading home as planned after the Winter Ball, my driver drove me to Back Bay under my instructions.

And now, here I am, standing outside Piper’s apartment at two o’clock in the morning.

The situation could unfold in one of two ways.

She’ll either welcome me inside or she’ll call the police.

Nonetheless, I am determined to know the reason behind why she’s been avoiding me.

It only takes two gentle knocks on her door before I hear the sound of her approaching footsteps.

“Piper?” I call out softly when I catch a glimpse of her crystal-blue eyes through her peephole.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she replies on the other side.
