“That you and I are friends?” he taunts. “I would think that being friends with a GM would work in your favor.”

“It would if it were true.” I breathe heavily through my nose.

“So we’re not friends?”

“No,” I state matter-of-factly.

He ponders on my answer for a mere second before nodding in agreement.

“You’re right. We’ve never really been friends. We skipped that part entirely, didn’t we?” He smirks suggestively, running his fingers up and down my arm. “But we aresomething.”

“We’re nothing,” I retort, pulling my arm away from him.

“Tsk, tsk.” He shakes his head. “Lying doesn’t become you, kitten. You and I both know the reason why we were never friends is because we’ve always beenmore.”

My heart rattles in my chest at the way he drawls out that word.

“Trent, go home,” I demand, but my order comes out far too breathless to have any heat behind it.

“And leave without giving the birthday girl her present?”

I bite my inner cheek, trying to keep my smile intact while giving him the evil eye.

“I don’t want a present. I don’t want anything from you.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” He shrugs, not looking the least bit apologetic. “Because one way or another, Iwillgive you your gift tonight. Now, I can do it here where everyone is watching or somewhere more private. I’ll leave that up to you.”

“God, you’re infuriating.”

“And you are a complete ray of sunshine,” he retorts sarcastically. “So, what will it be, Piper? Shall I give you your gift here in front of all your friends and colleagues, or should we go outside? Perhaps in the alley behind the bar?” His obsidian eyes gleam with mischief.

“That’s not happening.” I grit my teeth.

“Pity. Then I guess here will have to do.” And when he bridges the small gap between us, as if he’s about to kiss me, I jump back away from him.

Shit. Shit, shit!

“Wait.” I hold out my hand to stop him from taking another step. “Just wait.”

“Your move, Piper. What are you going to do?”

I let out an exaggerated exhale before I come up with an alternative that I can live with.

“Just follow me. And for the love of God, don’t look at my ass while you do it. Try to be discreet, will you?”

“No promises,” he goads.

I roll my eyes at him before I make my way through the throng of guests, a fabricated smile lighting up my face as they each offer me their congratulations and joyful birthday wishes, completely oblivious to the fact that I have a predator following me just a few steps behind.

When I turn the corner to the empty corridor that leads to the bathrooms, I let out a relieved exhale while Trent chuckles before cupping his large hand on my ass cheek.

“Oops. Sorry. Just couldn’t help myself. Your ass looks amazing in that dress.”

“Just shut it,” I whisper, slapping his hand off my ass before opening the door of the ladies’ room, making sure to turn around to see if anyone else is following us. When I verify that we’re completely alone, I tilt my head for him to go inside.

“You have five minutes,” I warn.

“Baby, we both know that I only need one to make you come,” he retorts smugly as he struts inside the bathroom, reminding me of our first encounter where he made me see God in record time.
