“Yes, love?”

“Kiss me. I need you to kiss me,” I plead, knowing that his mouth on mine will be the catalyst to my ruin.

Trent doesn’t even hesitate for a moment, crashing his mouth on mine to give me a whirlwind kiss. And just like I knew it would, his kiss tips me over the precipice until I’m falling… falling… falling into a vast, pitch-black ocean of bliss and euphoria.

“Fuck,” he groans, biting down on my neck as he comes inside me.

My body shivers as the searing heat gradually subsides and the embers cool. Trent’s strong arms hold me tight to fight the chill away, placing my head against his chest so I can hear the sound of his rapid heartbeat mimicking my own.

When crippling fear begins to nip at my nape, I push it away, not wanting it to ruin the beautiful moment we just shared.

I can have this.

Just a few more seconds.

What harm can a few more seconds do?

But all too soon, my spine stiffens, as if his arms wrapped protectively around me were too much for me to bear. Trent must sense it, too, because he pulls me out of his tender embrace and begins to slowly brush my hair back, craning my head so I can look him in the eye one more time.

“Happy birthday, Piper,” he says, his dark eyes searching mine.

Afraid that he’ll find some truth in them, something that I’m not ready for him to see, I immediately lower my gaze from his.

“Thank you.”

Trent lets out an exhale before picking me up and placing my feet down on the ground. I don’t say a word as he carefully straightens my dress and zips it back in place. Once he’s ensured I look presentable, he turns me around to face the mirror. Aside from my flushed cheeks and swollen lips, it’s like he never touched me. I’m not sure why that unsettles me, but it does.

Trent leans his chin on my shoulder and waits until our eyes lock with each other’s through the mirror’s reflection.

“You do look beautiful tonight. But then again, you’ve always looked beautiful to me,” he says wistfully, pressing a tender kiss on the side of my cheek before pulling away to head to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“Enjoy the rest of your party, Piper.”

“Trent—”

But before I have time to tell him to stay, he’s out the door.

Despite having to dodge a few poignant questions from my best friend after Lottie caught me leaving the same bathroom as Trent, the remainder of the party was lackluster at best.

Thankfully, Lottie didn’t press for answers. She was more preoccupied with her asshole of a boyfriend telling everyone that they were engaged than worrying about little old me getting some. Usually, I would have jumped on the prick and made him admit in front of the whole world what a two-faced liar he is, but my heart just wasn’t in it.

I must be really losing it if I lost my will to scold and admonish.

I usually live for that shit, especially where Coop is concerned.

But all I can think about is how Trent’s eyes dimmed in color before he walked out the door.

“Hey gorgeous, you okay? You look pretty down, considering this bigfiestais in your honor,” Caleb jokes, eyeing me attentively.

“I’m just done with this party, that’s all,” I murmur despondently.

“Then do what my brother and his wife did hours ago and bail,” he says as if it were a no-brainer.

“I can’t just leave my own party, Caleb. It would be rude.”

“Fuck that. If you’re no longer feeling it, then leave. Life’s too short to waste on boring shit. You deserve to have some fun tonight. If you’re not having it here, then leave. Who’s stopping you?”
