I pull another hundred for the extra bit of information and hand it to him.

“Anything else I can help you with, sir?” he says, back to using the polished etiquette that is expected from the wait staff.

“Yes. I’d like a whiskey on the rocks if you can manage it.”

“Right away, sir.” He smiles widely before going on yet another errand for me.

Lawrence Preston III.

Even the name sounds rich.

He must be some trust fund baby returning home from his stay across the pond. There are plenty of those walking about here, but Rex has never once shown them much interest before.

So why this man?

What could possibly intrigue Rex about this particular daddy’s boy?

I bristle with annoyance when I see Lawrence dismiss his attentive audience in favor of walking away with Rex in search of a more secluded area for them to talk, deciding to leave the crowded museum hall altogether so as not to be interrupted.

Something is up.

Something is definitely up.

What, though, is still to be seen.

When Connor returns with my drink, I tell him to stay close, just in case I need his services again tonight. I’m still somewhat preoccupied with this mysterious stranger that somehow piqued Rex’s interest when I catch a glimpse of a familiar blonde ponytail bobbing away through the crowd.

Hmm.

I was more than certain that Piper would be here tonight. She wouldn’t miss the last party of the summer, where she could make new connections while strengthening her previous ones.

And don’t let her black skin tight dress fool you, either.

The woman is all business.

That is, until the clock strikes midnight, and she goes off the clock in search of her next victim.

I run my thumb over my lower lip, watching her do her thing as I’ve done the last few years I’ve known her.

This never gets old, though.

It never fails to impress how she navigates effortlessly through the crowd, ensuring she ticks off each person on her list by winning over their loyalty with just a few carefully chosen words and a radiant smile that could sell toothpaste.

I chuckle inwardly when I see that my name hasn’t made the cut of people she needs to touch base with. Maybe I should be insulted that she sees me so unworthy of her time, but I know the real reason why she’s keeping her distance. Just like last Saturday night when she kicked me out of her house after I made sure to defile every inch of her, she wants to make sure that she’s setting some clear boundaries between us.

I felt a weird sense of pride when I discovered that after she was over and done with her hookups, she had no further use for them. Piper isn’t the sort of woman that wants to spoon or talk about her feelings after a good fuck.

No.

She’d rather sleep comfortably in her bed without having to suffer the awkwardness of having to share it with a stranger just to be polite. She had no qualms about how she would be perceived afterward. She got what she wanted. And that was all she was interested in.

I kind of like that about her.

Her don’t-give-a-shit attitude.

But then again, after that night, there are other things about Piper that I’ve grown fond of.

Fortunately, I don’t have to rely on memory alone to recall how that night began or how extraordinary she looks when she comes after her pussy has been properly devoured.
