“Lost,” Trent answers for me.

“Yes,” I reply, my forehead creasing with how intuitive he is. I didn’t think Trent would know his players that well to make such an assumption. But he hit the nail on the head with Nathan. He is a bit lost. Has been for the past couple of months.

“Well, if it’s guidance that he needs, I think I know just the person who can provide it.”

My smile hasn’t even fully stretched out on my face when Trent steals it from me with his next words.

“But if I do you this favor, then I’m going to need one in return.”

And here it is—the metaphorical strings of my good deed. The very ones that feel a lot like a rope being lassoed around my neck.

“If you think I’ll sleep with you just to ensure Nathan keeps his job, then what you are proposing sounds a lot like sexual harassment.”

It’s when he laughs that I see that sex is the farthest thing from his mind.

I’m not sure why my rejection feels like rocks have been flung into the pit of my stomach, but there it is.

“No, Piper. That’s not it. I just don’t want you to take me to the cleaners now that Jack’s contract is up.”

My cheeks feel all sorts of hot. I’m embarrassed how quickly my mind went there when he’s made no move to even touch me. In fact, I’m towering over him, invading his safe space and acting like it’s my right to do so.

“I would rather fuck you than fuck Jack over on his deal,” I retort, taking a wide step back and crossing my arms over my chest.

“Good to know.” He smirks. “I’m sure we can come to an agreement that doesn’t involve mixing business with pleasure.”

“An agreement? On Jack’s deal or on Nathan’s leniency?”

“You pick.”

“Not happening. They are both my clients. I won’t harm one to benefit the other.”

“Then suspension it is,” he says as he starts getting up from the couch. Before he can fully rise, I firmly push him back down and imprison him with my hands on either side of him.

“I said no suspension,” I demand forcefully.

“Then how much are you willing to negotiate for Jack?”

I have a number in my head already.

I know the Guardians can pay a hefty sum to keep their captain playing for his home team, but I also know that the Chicago Titans have had an eye on Jack for a few years now. Something I’m sure that Trent, being the man that he is when it comes to due diligence, must also be aware of.

“Twenty mill per year for a ten-year contract,” I blurt out.

It’s double what Chicago would offer, but I’m banking that he won’t call my bluff so easily. If I get ten million a year for Jack, it’s more than a win. It’ll be a fucking miracle.

“Too much. I’m paying him seven million a year now. That’s almost three times as much.” Trent frowns.

“That may be so, but Jack is worth every penny.”

“If that’s true, then why didn’t he get a better deal years ago?” he goads.

“Because I wasn’t his agent back then. But I am now, so I’m not going to let your star player lose out just because his general manager is a penny pincher.”

“Ouch,” Trent feigns insult by placing his palm over his chest.

His tatted up, muscular chest…

Focus, Piper!
