“Maybe I can make it even better.”

“Maybe.” I smile into my drink. “What did you have in mind?”

“I get off in thirty minutes.”

“Hmm. Tempting, but it’s a school night for me. Have to be up early in the morning.”

She leans further into the counter, her breasts pressed up against the marble so I can have a better view of her cleavage.

“You didn’t let me finish.” She smacks her lips flirtatiously. “I get off in thirty minutes. I can make sure you get off in forty.”

Though I won’t be taking her up on her salacious offer, I can’t deny that a good fuck would definitely improve my night.

And my mood.

But before I have the opportunity to tell her that I’m not interested, I hear a low grunt beside me, the familiar sound causing a delicious tingle to run down my spine and heating up my skin more than the smoldering sparkle in the pretty bartender’s eyes ever could.

“Whiskey. On the rocks.”

“Right away, sir,” the bartender says, pulling herself back to fetch him his drink.

She shakes her ass down the bar while I’m stuck having to sit here next to the one man whose mere presence always sets me aflame.

Trent Nichols.

If I thought this night couldn’t get any worse…I was dead wrong.

Chapter 2

Piper

“Lee,” Trent greets in his usual aloof tone.

“Nichols,” I mimic, placing my bulletproof mask back on.

“A little young for you, isn’t she?” he says with a hint of boredom in his voice while locking his dark glare on the pretty brunette currently preparing his drink.

“Is she?” I muse as my gaze purposely follows his line of vision to the woman in question. “If she’s behind a bar, then she’s legal enough. Besides, she looks to be around my age.”

“Hmm. That’s right. I always forget how young you are,” he ponders, sounding unhappy about the reminder. “Though I was under the assumption that you preferred them a little older. Wiser,” he adds, and for the first time since he decided to sit down beside me, he turns to face me head-on. “Someone who can teach you a thing or two instead of needing to be taught.”

“Do I look like a woman who enjoys being told what to do, even for education’s sake?” I cock a quizzical brow.

Trent’s coal-black gaze slowly slithers down my body as if my taunt was an invitation for him to do so. He takes in every inch of my teal sequin dress, making sure to linger on the slit that shows my bare leg crossed over my knee. After he’s had his fill, his gaze travels up until his piercing eyes are, once again, fixed on mine.

“You’d be surprised what you’d enjoy under the right tutelage,” he utters with such confidence I’m inclined to believe him.

Oh boy.

Here’s the thing about me—I don’t crap where I eat.

This means anyone who is involved in my line of business is completely off-limits. Just a rule I made up when I got into this game, and it’s done me good so far.

But when I made up such a rule, I never imagined I’d meet a man like Trent Nichols.

He’s ten years older than me, if he is a day, but it’s not our huge age gap that I find intimidating.

It’s how his black eyes always seem to darken whenever I’m in his vicinity.
