“Not all of them,” I smirk.

“And I guess I should be grateful for that.” She laughs. “But even if you had, I’d still be bound to my oath to keep everything you shared with me confidential. Just like I’m legally and morally bound to Nate.”

“If that were true, you wouldn’t have accepted my lunch offer.”

“Why not? A free meal is a free meal,” she teases, grabbing her own glass of wine.

“You and I both know there are no free lunches in this city. Everything has a price,” I counter firmly.

“Everything except my word to my clients. That oath I’ll never break.”

“Roxanne, you sure do know how to strain my patience,” I groan, seeing that extracting any type of useful information from my in-house therapist is going to be harder than I thought.

“I should hope so since no one else seems to be up to the job. Someone needs to keep you on your toes, Trent. Hearing the word ‘no’ every once in a while, builds up character. And you, my friend, should hear it more often.”

When the image of a certain stubborn, ball-buster blonde flashes in my mind, my lips turn into a deep-rooted frown.

I hate the word no.

It’s too damn limited and… final.

“Oh, I know that look,” Roxanne—who is always quick to pick up on my disgruntlement—accuses, her curiosity immediately piquing.

“Again, I have no idea what you are talking about,” I rebuke, drinking the rest of my wine.

“Don’t even try to deny it. I’ve seen that dark sparkle in your eyes for the better part of two years now. Is the bossy sports agent giving you a run for your money again? Is she still immune to your charms?” she goads, pulling her black-framed glasses down the bridge of her nose just to rile me up further.

This.

This is why I limit my interactions with the good doctor to be far and in between.

I might consider her a friend, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t piss me off.

“I forgot what kind of sharp memory you have. Is there nothing you don’t forget?”

“Not when it comes to my clients. Or my friends.” She grins. “Care to explain why your mind traveled to her all of a sudden? Or better yet, have you finally come to the realization that the notorious Piper Lee is more than a distraction? That she’s an obsession?”

“There you go again, throwing words like obsession around. I told you before that Ms. Lee amuses me. Nothing more,” I defend, tired of the same old discussion. “You’re the one who seems consumed by this uncontrollable fixation that I have any feelings for Ms. Lee other than sheer amusement.”

“I beg to differ. If I recall correctly, she was the reason why you stopped coming into therapy.” She arches a knowing eyebrow. “Why would you make such a decision if your feelings were in fact that shallow?”

“That’s because you started using words like obsession to describe a simple infatuation.”

“Tomayto, tomahto.” She has the audacity to smirk. “I stand by my previous assessment. If your feelings for Piper were, in fact, that innocent, you wouldn’t have ended our therapy sessions so abruptly. Nor would you track her every move whenever you saw the poor girl.”

“Great. Now you’re making me sound like a stalker.” I let out a loud exhale in exasperation. “And she’s not a girl. She’s a grown woman.”

Roxanne leans back in her chair, a wide, triumphant smile on her face, making me more on edge.

“Well, that’s progress. Last time we talked about Piper, her young age was a cause of concern for you. I’m curious to know what made you change your mind?”

Fucking her six ways from Sunday changed my mind.

Our age difference no longer held any meaning after she let me corrupt her so thoroughly.

“Goddamn it, Roxanne. I didn’t ask you here to listen to your mumbo jumbo.”

“No, you asked me here because you want me to break my oath and tell you personal details about one of your players that he shared with me in confidence. Again, I won’t give you what you want,” she replies sternly, no longer in a mocking mood.
