“Rex—”

“I know. I know,” he laments, shaking his head. “No need to say anything. Even I know I sound like a broken record.”

“No. That’s not what I was going to say.”

“Oh?” He raises his eyebrows.

“What I was going to say is that I’m going to miss you.”

Rex’s eyes widen.

“I… what?”

“Let me say my piece, old man. While I have the fortitude to do it. I know I’ve been less than understanding when you told me you were going to sell the club. I might have even been a bit of a dick about it.”

“Just a tad.” Rex smiles.

“But I get it. You need to do this to make things easier for you. I can’t say I know what you’re feeling or even put myself in your shoes, but I’m your friend. I should have shown you more compassion than that.”

Rex places his hand on my knee and gives it a pat.

“Thank you, son. I appreciate you saying that.”

“Yeah, well, I mean it. I will miss you, though. But I hope that this gives you the peace you’re looking for.”

When tears well up in his eyes, I feel my chest tightening.

“Fuck, don’t cry on me now, old man. I already have the reputation of being a cunt. If anyone sees you crying next to me, I’ll never hear the end of it.”

Rex lets out a cackle, a laugh that comes right from his gut, even as the tears stream down his cheeks.

And it suddenly dawns on me how he used to laugh so much more when Martha was alive.

And I missed it.

I guess my friend was long gone ages ago, and it only took me until now to actually see that.

God, I’m a prick.

“So you’re okay with this deal?” Rex says while wiping the tears away from his smiling face.

“I am, if you are. Just keep me in the loop. I’ll help you in any way I can.”

“I appreciate that, son. More than you know.”

“Good. I’m glad.” I smile at him. “So, do you know who you’re leaning towards selling the team to yet?”

“I have a pretty good idea.”

“Are you going to tell me anytime soon? You’re not getting any younger, old man.”

“I’ll do more than that.” He laughs. “I’ll introduce you to the man himself tonight.”

“Tonight?”

“Yep. I hope you like opera, son. And if not, best learn how to fake it, kid.”
