“Well then, let’s get you home,” she signs before picking up her violin case.

“Sounds good,” I sign back, lacing my arm through hers.

We both walk in tandem out of the front entrance of the opera house, but God must have a sick sense of humor because not only is it raining cats and dogs—which will make it a bitch to order an Uber or hail a cab—but also the man I’ve been trying to evade is leaning against his private limo, looking all sorts of sexy in his tux.

“I was wondering when you’d come out. Thought I lost you there for a minute.” He smirks while taking a step towards me and my mother.

“If only I’d been that lucky,” I say through gritted teeth so my mother doesn’t read my lips.

My mom and Trent smile at each other, waiting for me to make the necessary introductions. When I make no move to do such a thing, Trent decides to take matters into his own hands.

“I haven’t had the pleasure,” he says with a sparkle in his dark eyes. “You must be Piper’s older sister. I wasn’t aware she had siblings.”

My mother blushes and extends her hand for him to shake before signing that she’s my mother and not my sibling.

Flattering bastard.

I watch Trent try to curb his surprise upon finding out about my mother’s deafness, prompting me to step in and act as a mediator.

“Mom, this is Trent Nichols. He’s the General Manager of the Boston Guardians. Trent, this is my mom, Shelby Lee. “

“Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Trent,” I translate for my mother.

“The pleasure is all mine,” he replies politely, causing my heart rate to pick up when he gifts my mother with one of his genuine smiles.

“Piper has told me great things about you,” my mother says, but when I refuse to sign, she pulls out her phone and uses the text-to-speech app, one that she depends on to interact with someone who doesn’t know sign language.

“Has she now?” Trent purses his lips to keep his gloating smile in check. “I’d love to hear more. Maybe we could have some coffee and discuss everything your lovely daughter has spoken about me.”

“Actually, it’s pretty late,” I interject before my mom accepts his offer. “We should be heading home.”

“Fair enough,” he retorts, unable to hide his disappointment. “Then how about a lift? I’d be honored if I could drive you ladies home.”

I’m about to make another excuse, but my mother beats me to the punch by accepting his offer with a nod and a bright smile.

With a wicked grin, Trent opens the door for Mom. She slides right in, completely oblivious that sitting in such close quarters with him—when he looks good enough to eat—is the last thing I want to do right now.

Trent keeps the door open for me, but before I follow my mother in, I stand as close as I can to the wretched man so my mom doesn’t read my next words.

“Just what the hell are you playing at?”

“I have no idea what you mean? Can’t I just do the chivalrous thing of taking you and your mother home without having any ulterior motives behind it?”

“Right.” I scoff. “Like you even have a chivalrous bone in your body.”

“Now, now, kitten. Play nice and pull back your claws. We’ll have plenty of time to play with themlater.”

I roll my eyes and slip into the back seat as Trent takes the seat in front of us.

After I give him my mother’s address, followed by my own, I turn my attention over to the window at my side, watching the rain pour down my beautiful city instead of having to look at Trent’s gorgeous face a minute longer.

“The symphony played beautifully tonight, Mrs. Lee. I’m not much of an opera fan, but I did appreciate the music.”

Mom is quick to reply, but when I take too long to translate, she gives me a little elbow to the side.

Argh.

She repeats what she said, and I translate accordingly.
