He clasped his hands together. “Be careful. Vâlves areextremelyemotional, and if you make them mad or hurt them, they will come after you with everything they have. They will make you pay dearly.” His personal experience hung heavy on his brow; the memories he wouldn’t share, what she did to him, could be felt in the air.

He may be happy with where his life was now, but her vengeance no doubt took a toll. Not only changed his life, but him fundamentally.

“Ummm… I’m sorry to interrupt.” Anca’s voice jerked both of our heads to the entrance of the hallway. “I’m afraid youriubit.”Lover, sweetheart. “Fell asleep in the tub, and I can’t get her out.” She motioned for me to follow her.

“Oh.” I stood. “Of course.” Giving Vasile a grateful nod, I trailed after Anca to the washroom.

My alcohol-soaked brain was still mulling over what Valise had told me, not even thinking, when Anca opened the door for me. I stepped into the tiny bathroom, hearing it shut behind me.

My boots went still on the rug, my muscles stiffening, my eyes rolling down the completely naked figure in the bath. The water only reached her torso, exposing her breasts.

My cock went hard, aching and straining my pants as my eyes rolled over her tits, her stunning features soft in sleep, her cheeks flushed.

Fuck.

Energy zinged around me, pulsing my cock. Sex was our default. Nature fairies were like steaming pots, needing to constantly relieve the overflow so we didn’t explode. Too much magic from the environment thrummed our nerves like guitar strings.

The desire to fuck stole my breath for a moment. To feel that bliss, the utter release I never felt anymore, no matter who I fucked or how hard or “good” it was. My eyes squeezed together at the onslaught of need, my hand squeezing my cock more to cause pain than anything else.

Stop it, you sick asshole. I barked at myself. You are drunk, desperate to get high, and horny. It has nothing to do with her.

Naked figures never bothered me before. Fae loved being nude. It was natural, normal, and, most of the time, not even sexual. What the fuck was wrong with me?

Taking a heaving breath, I berated myself again before I opened my eyes. Grabbing a towel, I leaned over and pulled the plug on the tub. She’s like a little sister. I repeated in my head, turning to my clinical healer side. You mean like the one you let die?A voice nipped at me.

“Scarlet, wake up.” I draped a towel over her front as the last of the water disappeared down the drain. “Scarlet?” I shook her. “Come on.”

Her lashes batted, her green eyes barely hinting through her lids before they closed again.

“You’re not going to make this easy, are you?” I grumbled, getting my arms under her frame and lifting her out of the tub. I disregarded the way my hands glided over her ass and bare back, the way her body curled into mine, her wet skin soaking through my clothes.

The movement pushed a moan from her throat, sucking in the pain from her ribs, but her eyes stayed closed.

“Scarlet?”

She tucked deeper against me, muttering.

I sighed, wanting nothing more than to put her down and get far away.

Making sure she was covered, I awkwardly opened the door with her in my arms. Anca stood right outside, waving to me to follow her to the room across the hall.

“I’m sorry, we only have the one bed in here.” She scurried to the nightstand, turning on a kerosene light. “And we’re trying to save as much energy as we can.” Her throat bobbed in embarrassment. “It hasn’t been good for us farmers lately.”

Authoritarianism never was. It wasn’t good for anyone except those at the top.

Settling into the room, it felt small and chilly, holding a twin bed against one wall, a nightstand, a chair, and a clothes cabinet. “But I brought extra blankets and some clothes to sleep in.” She waved to the pile on the chair.

“You have been so kind.” I spoke quietly, not wanting to wake Scarlet.

Anca’s gaze hopped between us, a loving smile warming her face, and I could sense what she was thinking, her thoughts voiced loudly with her unshielded human emotions. She thought us so in love. A beautiful couple.

“If you need anything, don’t be afraid to ask.” She stepped out, shutting the door before I could respond.

Turning, I lowered her to the twin bed, the towel pulling away from her.

My teeth ground together, and I twisted to grab some of the clothing Anca brought.

“Scarlet?” I needed her awake enough to help me. “Sit up.”
