2 – Muff

THE WHOOSH OF AIR SLAMSagainst my face as the plane door is opened, and the world below comes into view.Grinning, I turn to Janine, who is staring, eyes wide, her back pressed against the plane wall and her seatbelt is so tight I’m certain that if this plane did go down, she’d still be in it by the time they found her.

She looks terrified.

Fucking adorable when she looks so scared.

“Are you sure this is safe?”

Her voice is difficult to hear over the low humming of the plane and wind.

The instructor, who is doing all the final checks, answers her question without even looking up.

“It’s safe,” he tells her, tightening a strap.“I frequently do this.Never had an accident.”

“Sure you don’t want to jump with me?”I say, taking a pair of goggles he hands me.

Janine shakes her head quickly, looking terrified.

For a woman who spent most of her time with a club that was as rough as they come, she’s very timid.Janine doesn’t take risks, and she doesn’t step outside the box.Not if it means she is risking her safety.I love seeing her laugh and let her hair down, but it isn’t an easy task getting her to that point. She holds that wall she has built up so tightly against herself, it’s hard to chip away at.

I want to see her a little wild.

“Ready?”

Nodding at the instructor, I give him the thumbs up as he attaches me to him, and we get ready for the jump. Then, before I know it, we’re soaring out of the plane. The feeling that washes over me is absolutely inexplicable. My laughter and the bellow of joy is drowned out by the loud wind, but the adrenaline rushing through my veins as we soar through the sky is something I’ll never forget. It’s the best feeling in the world when your body is in this state. It’s the same rush as being high, and if you’re not careful, you can spend your life hunting it down just to feel it again.

By the time we land on the ground, and my feet hit the solid earth, I am grinning from ear to ear.The plane has landed, and Janine is standing, having watched me land. Her face is pale, but I can see relief in her eyes when the parachute drops to the ground. The instructor releases me, and I walk toward her, my legs shaky with the rush running through my body right now.

“You’re crazy, Brian,” she smiles, shaking her head.

“I know, baby, but fuck, it is the best feeling in the world. It’s like bein’ high, times a thousand.”

“I’ve never been high,” she shrugs.“I wouldn’t know.”

I raise my brow.“You’ve never been high? Not even weed?”

Shaking her head, she looks a little sheepish.“Not even weed.”

“Baby girl,” I say, giving her a sad expression.“You’re missin’ out.”
