The smell of coffee hits me as I tiptoe in my front door, dashing any hope I had of making it inside without detection. I remove my coat and shoes, placing them in the closet before setting my purse down on the entry table. I drag my feet on my way to the kitchen, bracing myself for Julianna’s interrogation.

She smirks at me from the table as I make myself a cup of coffee, remaining surprisingly silent. Her stare is cautious, her head tilting as I join her and take a long sip from my mug.

“Go ahead.” I sigh, setting my coffee down.

Her lips curl as she sits back in her chair and crosses her arms. “What do you mean?”

I frown. “Oh, please. Like you aren’t dying to ask me about last night.”

“Are you saying there’s something to tell?” she retorts, raising her eyebrows.

“No.” My answer doesn’t match the high-pitch of my voice or the blush of my cheeks.

“No?” she repeats. “So, you’re telling me you spent the entire night with that gorgeous man, who you spend most of your free time either being with or talking to, and nothing happened?”

“Exactly.” I avert my gaze to the cup in front of me, picking it up to take another sip.

It’s not a lie. But being with him in such an intimate way changed things. Or maybe it merely opened my eyes to the way things are. I’m not sure anymore.

She huffs. “Are you seriously not going to tell me what happened?”

“There’s nothing to tell. We fell asleep watching movies. Nothing else happened.”

“Where?”

I cough, nearly chocking on my coffee. “What?”

“I asked where the two of you fell asleep,” she says, chuckling.

My stomach flutters at the memory of being in his arms, the flush of my skin making my thoughts evident. “Does it matter?” I tap my nails on the mug, feigning disinterest.

“Spill it,” she demands, rubbing her hands together with anticipation. “Were you in his bed?”

I freeze mid-sip, my body tensing, and she squeals, “Oh my gosh, you were. You totally slept—”

She cuts herself off mid-sentence at the sound of tiny feet barreling toward us, and my eyes go wide.

“Oh, yeah. Your parents brought the kids home a little while ago. Did I forget to mention that?” Julianna says, grinning animatedly as the kids burst into the room.

“Hey, guys.” I school my features, plastering a big smile on my face. “I didn’t know you were home. Did you have a good time?”

“I did, Mommy,” Sean answers, embracing me with a quick hug before heading over to the refrigerator to get himself a juice.

“Good. I’m glad, baby. What about you, Maddie?”

She shrugs, taking a seat at the table. “Yeah, it was fun. Mimi gave me some gum, but it was sugar free.”

I chuckle. My mother is notorious for giving them stuff they aren’t normally allowed.

“Where were you when we got home?” Maddison asks, and my heart skips a beat.

“I, uh…well…I was…” I stammer, “I was visiting with a friend.”

“Brenden?”
