He answered immediately. “Well, hello. Guess where I’m standing right now.”

“Where?” I said, twisting in my seat to watch Tobi ponder the cake choices.

“In the middle of your bedroom.”

“At the cottage, I hope.”

He answered with a low chuckle. “I guess that did sound kind of creepy. I’m not in the bunkhouse, rooting through your underwear.”

I wanted to flirt back, but there were families nearby. “Good to know.”

“My question is, ye have overhead spotlights already, but only monsters use the big light, right? So, I’m putting in plug sockets for lamps either side of where the bed will go. Another can go by the door. Is that enough?”

“I think so,” I breathed.

“Nice. They’re all double sockets, in case ye need to plug anything else in when you’re in bed.”

I pressed my lips together. “How did you make that sound so…?”

“Dirty? It’s a gift.”

“You’re very talented.”

A pause played out.

Tobi pointed to her choice—a purple fairy cake with sprinkles—and Bette put it onto a plate. I half stood, my purse at the ready, but she waved me away.

When Valentine spoke again, his tone changed to more curious. “Where are ye anyways? With your daughter?”

“I am.”

“In a secret location somewhere in the country that I won’t ask or even guess at.”

I smiled. “Appreciated.”

“Not even a hint?”

“You’re a terrible gossip, so no.”

He took a shocked breath. “Damn, sweetheart. Arrow to the heart.”

I winced, my words unfair. I didn’t know where they’d come from. “Sorry. I didn’t mean you were untrustworthy.”

“I like a good story as much as the next man but I’ll take your secrets to the grave.” He hummed. “Will ye be staying in that mystery locale?”

“Yep. I’m sleeping here tonight.”

“Then I’m on my lonesome.”

“I’m sure you’ll find something to do.”

He made a low rumbling sound. “With the images I have of last night in my head? I think I’ll cope. The shower might get abused, though.”

I gave a breathy, startled, definitely turned-on laugh.

“Will I see ye tomorrow?” Valentine added.

“You will. I’ll probably drive straight to my first job but I’ll be back at the bunkhouse in the evening.”
