“Security?” I asked.

“That’s right.”

“It’s about time. I’m Paul from Human Resources. We’ve left multiple messages about unauthorised vehicles taking up spaces here. I’ve come in on my day off to deal with this because no one is getting back to us.” I was pushing my luck. In jeans and a black jacket, I appeared anything but corporate. At least my hair was tied back.

The security guard blinked. “It’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

The orange truck entered the car park.

Fuck.

“That’s not good enough,” I argued. “We’ve had the director and multiple important visitors unable to park outside our own office. They’ve had to walk in the rain to get into our buildingbecause their spaces have been taken up. I’ve asked that all cars be checked for a permit.”

He eyed me. “What did you say your name was again?”

“Paul. I’m from HR. Are we going to have a problem?”

The man started. “No, I didn’t say that. Leave it with me. I’ll make sure the team know.”

Mia’s follower inched down the central row.

We were on the third to the left. If he got there and turned, the game was over.

“Still not good enough.” I pointed to the truck, keeping low to the security car so the driver couldn’t see me. “Who’s this guy? I don’t recognise that car, and he’s about to take up one of our spaces. We have meetings today. Go do your job.”

The officer jumped his gaze to where I pointed.

I held my breath.

He glowered, nodded at me, and drove on.

Thank fuck for that. I didn’t wait around. We had to leave one way or another. Slinking between rows, I jumped a low barrier, appearing at the back of my car. Down the way, the security guard pulled up alongside the orange truck. The guard called something to the driver.

This was our chance. I tapped on my door. It clicked, Mia leaning over the central console to let me in.

“I didn’t want to use the keys in case it turned on the lights,” she whispered.

“Smart of ye,” I commended.

“Valentine, is the jerk gone?” Tobi asked.

In my seat, I twisted to face her, surprised at her talking to me. She was a mini-me of her ma, with the same sweet face down to the quizzical expression. I caught myself grinning.

“Aye, sweetheart. I think so.”

The movement of the car headlights showed me the driver peeling away back to the exit.

“Can we go home now?” she added.

I watched the road for a moment longer, inwardly cheering when the lights went left and deeper into the business park.

It left our route back to the fast road clear. My tactic had paid off.

Relief, satisfaction, and an array of other shite mixed up in my chest. My answer was for her, but my focus lingered on her ma.

“We can. Settle in for a wee nap, and I’ll get ye home safe.”
