Isobel: What’s the result like?

Viola: Have to wait twenty-four hours for it to harden before we can find that out. I’ll report back with test results this time tomorrow.

A mass of comments flooded in, the women all delighting in the image Viola had painted of her man sitting there with a tube of gloop around his dick. They were Finn’s parents, and Viola’s husband, Leo, was the musician Valentine and his crew were paid to protect.

Making a vibrator replica of your dick was such a rock-star thing to do.

It tickled me that they were getting up to this while their son was out shopping with his bodyguard.

I rolled over in bed, scrolling through the messages with my mind pulling in another direction. I’d never owned a sex toy. That was a mistake. Maybe sexual frustration was part of my problem, and why I’d reacted so badly to knowing that Valentine had screwed someone else.

Ultimately, I wanted a boyfriend, but I didn’t want to be a jealous, stifling girlfriend to whoever that guy turned out to be. Which meant handling some of my issues.

I needed a toy of my own, but when I thought about it, I could only picture Valentine’s incredible dick.

It’s a shame they didn’t design vibrators based on him.

The pieces slotted together in my mind. The obvious answer right there.

I sat up, dropping my phone to the sheets. What if I asked him to model a vibrator for me? It would be the ultimate way of getting over him and not being a moping weirdo if I saw him with anyone else. Plus I knew him. He’d find the idea hilarious. It would get us back on easier ground.

All I had to do was pluck up the courage and ask.

Chapter 15

Valentine

The reverb from an electric guitar buzzed through the recording studio, Leo and his band fitting in a practice session. Most of his team had left already to head over to the continent, readying for his European tour. The rest of us would follow in a week, and I was gunning to get out there.

My team had trained hard for this. We’d rehearsed scenarios, planned who we were marking and when, and worked out contingencies until my brain ached. The planning was important, but I was an active guy and I did my best work out in the field.

Across the studio, a glum six-year-old stared at his hands, and a pair of blue headphones nestled into his mop of hair.

I’d come to find Finn to deliver him to his friend’s house for dinner. It had taken a while to hunt him down in the castle. Atmy gesture, he hopped off the sofa and tossed the headphones, trudging after me to the car.

It wasn’t like the lad to be so quiet. For a week, I’d been taking him to school every morning and then home in the afternoon, under Ben’s orders to get to know him as I’d be protecting him most days.

I was doing a shite job of that right now.

“What’s up, little bro? Ye upset over something?” I asked.

Finn peeked over at me then shrugged.

I tried again, slowing my drive across the estate. “If something happened at school, ye can tell me.” I knew fuck all about kids and school life, but everyone had good and bad days, regardless of age. “I’m your bodyguard,” I added. “If someone’s mean to ye, they answer to me.”

He mulled over that, fingers twisting in his lap. Then he turned in his seat. “Why do we need bodyguards?”

Damn, I hadn’t thought this through. “Ye don’t, round here. But when your da is on tour, that’s when the crazies… I mean, that’s when we have to be around the public. And not everyone is chill.”

“Will people try to hurt Da?” His serious wee expression intensified. “Davies in school said a guitar player was killed dead. My da plays guitar.”

That’s why he’d been watching his da’s rehearsal. He’d been guarding him himself.

Davies was going to get a lecture from his teacher, courtesy of me. I gritted my teeth. It wasn’t right to lie to kids, but there was no way I was letting him carry that fear. “Your da isn’t going to be hurt, but just think what it’s like in a big crowd. It’s easy to get lost or swept away, and he’s so loved by his fans that they all come to see him. What happens with an even bigger crowd? More chance of getting lost. Ben, Jackson, Raphael, and I are there to keep ye all safe.”

Finn scrunched up his nose. “So he won’t get dead?”

“Naw.”
