Back in my cottage, I busied myself with tidying up the place. I’d ordered a few bits and pieces with my first paycheque and had picked them up from a parcel box in the village as we didn’t have a mail service at the cottage.

My brain stayed resolutely on the big, dark-haired bodyguard.

Fixing up some hanging shelves in Tobi’s room? Valentine handing me a hook then tumbling me onto the rug. Sticking a toothbrush holder to the bathroom wall? Valentine in the shower, beckoning me to join him.

Holy shit, that one was hot.

In my bedroom, draping a new throw blanket at the end of my quilt? Valentine on the floor screwing in the electrical plugs. Of course, my brain didn’t leave it there. It let me picture him stripping, pushing me back on the bed, and screwing me instead. I sighed, putting the cool back of my hand to my heated cheek.

A thump came at the door.

Good. I needed a distraction before I burned up into cinders.

I rushed to answer. Valentine waited on the other side. He leaned on the wooden post that supported the porch roof above, and gave me an amused grin. “I was going to say hi, but what have ye been up to? You’re all flushed.”

I pressed my lips together to hide a smile. “Mind your business. What are you doing here?”

Valentine tipped his head at the adjoining home. “Working next door this evening. I just wanted to give ye and Tobi a heads-up in case of any banging.”

I swallowed at the wordbanging. “Tobi’s out for a couple of hours.”

His amusement switched to careful perusal. “That so?”

“I apologise for the other night,” I said quickly, needing to get the words out. “I was out of line.”

“Which part?”

I glowered at him. “You know what I’m talking about.”

“Not sure I do. Ye didn’t say anything to offend me.”

“The toy thing. See? You had to make me say it.”

Valentine folded his arms, so infuriatingly handsome, I wanted to strangle him.

“Did ye really buy a kit?”

Heaving a sigh, I nodded.

His eyes gleamed. “Show me it.”

I gasped in outrage. “No.”

“How am I supposed to be the model if I don’t see what I’ve got to do?”

My jaw dropped. “You’ll do it? But you didn’t say. I was waiting for a reply. I thought I’d humiliated myself.”

Valentine merely tutted and jerked his chin. “Wasting time here.”

Jumping forward, I grabbed his sleeve and tugged him inside the living room, closing the door after. “Stay,” I ordered, then hustled to my bedroom. From a box under my bed, I extracted the kit I’d bought late at night when overconfident and worked up. Now, it felt too real.

I stared at it, the exterior packaging not hiding the contents at all. A large dildo crossed the cover with a guy posing in briefs behind.

My confidence wobbled.

A figure loomed at my back. Valentine reached around me and took the kit from my hands, squinting at the writing and the picture on the front. Then he opened it on my bed, pulling out the instructions and the plastic-encased items that needed to be used.

While he laid it out, I shook, frozen to the spot.
