“Did I do okay?”

She raised her eyebrows, checking the junction to pull onto the road. “God, yes. Your work is amazing. I was worried that you’d turn tail and run.”

Relief trembled inside me. “I never would. Least because I can’t afford to run. You can throw anything at me and I’m your girl. I probably shouldn’t say any of that, but it’s true.”

Daisy exhaled. “I’m trying to be respectful and mind my own business, but I have to admit I was concerned after your interview that you were in danger.”

“I just need to find my feet,” I said fast.

“While avoiding some people?”

“Exactly that.”

Tension played out between us. Again, I held in all the words I wanted to blurt.

Daisy reached for the sound system, turning it on. “Pick a song.”

“I’m sorry?”

“I want us to be friends, and you can tell me as much or as little as you like, whenever you’re ready. In the meantime, we’ll bop all the way home.”

So we did.

My new boss and I alternated our song choices, more Taylor Swift than any other artist, and the return journey zipped by. I was still on edge, watching the roads, expecting to see familiar cars on the hunt for me. But so far so good.

Daisy slowed as we entered the hangar’s parking lot, stopping with her focus on something across the expanse of flat moor. I followed her gaze.

Valentine and a group of men were out in the open, working through some sort of action sequence. One of the men advanced on Valentine, holding out an object. The huge man—taller than the others by a few inches—blocked the attack and had the first guy on his back in the blink of an eye.

“That is so attractive it should be illegal,” I breathed.

Daisy giggled. “Valentine? He’s single, if you’re interested in knowing.”

I goggled at her, my cheeks heating. “Oh no. He wouldn’t look twice at me.”

Unless he was stroking his dick in the shower, but then probably any woman would do as a visual aid.

“What do you mean?”

“He’s gorgeous. Have you seen me?”

Daisy’s expression turned fierce. “Honey, no, we don’t let women put themselves down here. Didn’t your mama ever tell you you’re beautiful?”

God.My lip trembled.

In all I’d done to walk away from my and Tobi’s old life, I’d had to put a pin in thoughts about Mom. I’dlosther. I missed her so much it killed me. But I had to keep going or I’d lose more than her alone.

Daisy’s face fell. “I just said something stupid, didn’t I? I’m sorry.”

I managed a shaky laugh. “Please don’t apologise.”

“I did, though. I was aiming for supportive tough love. It wasn’t meant to be flippant in any way.”

I took a long breath, returning my gaze to Valentine. He spotted the car. Raised a hand then nudged one of the other men.

“My mother died six months ago,” I forced out.

Daisy exhaled, starting a sentence but slow with her words.
