I stared. “I lost a whole day?”

“And then some.” She checked the clock on the wall. “It’s eight PM. I was just messaging Daisy with an update.”

Well, fuck. I shut my mouth.

Mia continued. “Your stab wound got infected, and you picked up a fever. They gave you some heavy-duty antibiotics and you responded well to them. Your body needed rest, according to the doc I spoke to this morning.”

“Ye drove all the way here to see me?”

“Twice.”

A strange feeling tightened in my chest. I’d felt it before with her. It was either a big dose of gratitude or I was having a heart attack.

“Thank ye,” I managed. “Where’s Tobi?”

“With Elise and Cameron. Visiting hours are almost over, so I’ll have to leave, then I’ll go pick her up and get her home.”

I exhaled, struggling upright. “Take me with ye.”

“No chance. You’re staying until they release you.” Mia reached for my hand.

“Don’t leave me here,” I mumbled.

“I have to. You didn’t take care of yourself which is why you’re back in a hospital bed.” Her serious gaze held mine hostage. “But, I have an idea for when they let you go.”

“Which is?”

Someone tapped on the door. Mia glanced over and nodded.

“I have to go. I’ll come back tomorrow and tell you then.”

The last thing I wanted was for her to walk out that door and leave me alone, but there was no choice. Plus I felt fucking awful, so there was no way I could go with her.

I let her leave with a hug and a promise that she’d come back.

The same nightmare haunted me all fucking night. The door. The sounds. The awareness.

True to her word, Mia returned the following afternoon.

She talked to my doc, a stern older woman who gave me the facts of how I’d risked my life for no good reason, then sat with me while I choked down dinner.

“If you’re feeling better tomorrow, they’ll probably let you go.”

“What? The doc told me another couple of days in prison at least.”

She chewed her lip. “I know how much you hate it in here. I had an idea and I asked her and she agreed.” Mia’s pretty eyes focused on me. “What if you come home with me?”

I set down my fork. She continued quickly.

“I spoke to Tobi, and she’s happy to have you stay at ours. You can have my bed, and I’ll sleep on Tobi’s floor or on the sofa. Whatever. That way, you’ll have someone watching over you properly so you don’t relapse again. The hospital will release you earlier that way.”

“I could kiss ye.”

Mia flushed a gorgeous pink. “Better not. I just want to be a good friend. It’ll also stop your brother from spiralling and Leo from cancelling the tour so they can come back and see you. This way solves all the problems.”

I just stared at her, too many thoughts clamouring for attention. Elation, relief, something heavier, too.

Mia stood with a glance at the clock. “I need to go now, but I’ll be back in the morning. It’s Sunday, so I’m not working. Let me know then.”
