It was cheap and fucking lazy. Worst of all was preying on Mason’s pack like this.

“I was hopeless, Mason. I hope you know that. I appreciate all of the support from the pack, but … everything is so expensive,” Florence cried.

Her eyes welled with tears, and Ash gave her grace, reaching her hands out to take Florence’s. Mason could feel his anger dissipating.

“We understand. We just need the number so we can find him, and we can work on researching other resources to help your mom. We promise.”

Eventually, Florence gave in. The number was the same.

After leaving Florence’s house, Mason felt drained. His body had been switching between anguished rage and extreme empathy for the entire evening.

“So now we know they aren’t lying,” Ash said as they walked back to Mason’s place. “That is a good sign. Next is figuring out where the number came from. I am guessing it won’t be straightforward.”

“Likely not,” Mason replied.

They walked in silence back to Mason’s estate, where Mason tucked his hand into Ash’s as they climbed the porch steps.

“I couldn’t have done this without you,” he said as they moved inside. “Really. That was tiring.”

“Well, I hope you aren’t too tired,” she said, slipping hands around his waist. “There are definitely a few ways that I can help you relax.”

Mason yanked her into him, crushing her mouth with his own. She chuckled under his lips as they began to passionately make out in the hallway, the day’s concerns fading into silence.

They went upstairs and showered together. Mason lathered her up, and she lathered him. They had a quickie in the shower with Ash pressed up against the wall, their climaxes echoing against the marble and prepping them for their tranquil slumber.

FIFTEEN

ASH

“Listen, Florence. Your involvement is minimal, and you won’t even have to go to the meet. But you do need to set it up.”

Ash was hoping Florence’s desire to please her alpha was as strong as she had sensed it was when they had first gone to her house to interrogate her for the Puppeteer’s information.

They were sitting in Florence’s kitchen. Mason and Ash had come through the back, letting themselves in. They needed a plan, and Florence was going to help them with that.

Mason stood over Ash’s shoulder, arms crossed and staring hard at the trembling woman. Ash didn’t blame her. Mason was thundering silently in all his alpha aura. She was glad she wasn’t the one who betrayed him.

“I don’t know. Believe me, I want to. Really.”

“But?” Mason growled.

“The Puppeteer … he’s … I just … I can’t get lost in this. I’m all my mother has left. Who will take care of her if …” Florence shuddered, looking as if she were about to fall apart.

Mason was the one who addressed her.

“I understand why you did what this bastard wanted. You needed something, and he took advantage of that. That is why I didn’t kill you the moment I found out you betrayed your pack.”

“No!” Her eyes shot up to meet the man behind Ash. “I didn’t betray the pa–”

“You did,” Mason said quietly but powerfully so. Florence fell silent.

“By betraying me, you betrayed the pack. Don’t act naïve in this. I said I understand, and you will be forgiven, but your help isn’t a request.”

Ash’s body shivered in delight at hearing Mason take charge. It wasn’t cruel, but it was not to be fucked with either, and that was hot to her. Especially coming from her mate’s mouth.

Focus, she lectured herself as the trembling Florence finally nodded in agreement.

“Good.” Mason took a seat beside Ash and folded his hands on the table.
