ONE

FIONA

“It’s about time you showed up!” chastised one of her friends. Alexis was the only tall, beautiful blonde wearing a plastic tiara.

Fiona rolled her eyes with a smirk and joined her three friends around the booth.

“We always come to this bar, Alexis. You didn’t want to do anything special for your birthday.” Fiona poured herself a glass of beer from the communal pitcher.

Alexis let out a sigh. “This was the only place I knew everyone wouldn’t say no to.”

“That’s not true. It’s your birthday; we would have done whatever and gone wherever you wanted,” Lillian protested.

“Oh, please. We all know better. Alexis is right. When was the last time we were all together for whatever reason?” Fiona pulled her thick, brown hair out of the clip she had worn and let it tumble down her shoulders. She held up her glass. “To the birthday girl!”

The other three joined in the toast as Fiona continued. “May we make more time to see each other since we are quickly aging.”

“May we not take work so seriously that we forget to enjoy our time with one another,” Lillian added.

“And maybe even make time for our own love lives,” Chloe added.

The group let out a dry laugh, clinking their glasses together.

After taking a sip, Fiona noticed Alexis eyeing them all with speculation.

“What? Why are you looking at us like you have a master plan?”

“I don’t. I’m just happy we were all able to find the time to finally get together. If I knew it would take my birthday, I would have had it months ago.”

Lillian looked disgusted. “You mean you’d get older sooner just to see us more?”

“If it meant I got to see my best friends, I’d take the hit.”

Fiona laughed but still waited for the real reason Alexis was looking at them that way.

“It’s also just nice to know that if Chloe is hard up about love, then that means we all are.”

“And there it is,” Fiona snickered as she and Lillian shared a knowing glance.

“I’m serious. We all have been so focused and driven by our careers that we barely make time for each other, let alone a love life. The clock is ticking, girls, and my pussy isn’t getting any tighter.”

Fiona snorted in her drink with sudden laughter.

“Actually, I think you mean wetter. It tends to dry out with age. It actually should be tighter since it hasn’t been used as much,” Chloe pointed out.

They all burst out into fits of laughter.

When the giggles faded, they were all left with the solemn truth. As much as they joked, they were all still single and not necessarily pleased with the prospect.

“Seriously, though, do we really want to be dealing with that drama?” Fiona asked.

“Hell, no!” Lillian shouted. The women cheered their approval.

“Dating just isn’t a priority for me right now. I like my career,” Chloe added. The others nodded in agreement.

“I know I wouldn’t give up being a journalist for some lame-ass man to decide in a month I’m not worth his time. My job keeps me busy as shit, as I know yours does. I don’t need a distraction,” she said.

It wasn’t a lie. Fiona was born with the journalistic instinct of curiosity. She loved searching for the next story. And from the relationships she had seen in the past, her concern that a man wouldn't be worth the trouble was understandable.
