When Callum pushed the door open to his room, Fiona saw a monitor and an elderly lady waiting for them.
“Ah, perfect timing. I just got set up. Let’s get her hooked up and check this baby out.” The woman was spritely for her apparent age.
Callum laid Fiona gently onto the bed and stroked her hair.
“Are you sure you feel okay?” he asked one last time as the woman hooked up the monitor to Fiona.
She nodded and held his hand. “You’ll see.”
Fiona lifted her shirt, knowing the procedure, and the woman squeezed the ultrasound gel on her belly.
She took the wand and began moving around Fiona’s abdomen. Suddenly, a fast and loud thumping was heard over the monitor.
“Everything sounds and looks good. I’d advise you to go to the clinic and get everything looked over more thoroughly in the morning. It would be good to get some labs run to double-check after the whole ordeal you’ve gone through. But I can confidently say baby and mom are doing well.” The woman beamed at Callum as if proud to deliver the good news to her Alpha.
“Thank you, Cindy. We appreciate it.”
The elderly lady smiled as she gathered her things and quickly made her way out of the room with one final wave.
“I told you everything was fine,” Fiona said as she snuggled deeper into the many pillows. It felt good to be safe. To be with Callum.
He crawled to the other side of her and pulled her close to him.
“I thought I had lost you.”
Her heart tightened. “I knew you’d come for me.”
“Still,” he said. “It made me realize I can’t go any longer without telling you exactly how I feel, mating bond or not.”
She turned to look into his captivating eyes.
“I love you, Fiona. I can’t bear to lose you.”
Her throat tightened. She was afraid if she spoke, tears would follow. Still, she took a gulp and admitted the words she had been hiding, not only from him but from herself.
“I love you too. I’m ready for the mating mark.”
Callum nodded and kissed her gently. Fiona felt the need for more and deepened the kiss. His lips were gentle yet demanding against hers, coaxing her into responding with more urgency. It was a taste she couldn't get enough of.
As Callum's weight pressed down on her, Fiona felt the heat of his body seeping through her clothes. His hands traveled up and down her sides, sending shivers of pleasure coursing through her skin.
