“There is nothing civilized about you.”

“I could say the same for you.” Henry pursed his lips. “You look a little tired, son. You still not sleeping well?”

Midas remained standing.

“Still have those nightmares? You always had such nightmares as a kid. Used to wake up screaming. You would always yell and say that a woman was being attacked.”

Midas’s hands fisted. “You told me it was nothing. Over and over. Nothing. But I must have heard a scream at least once, didn’t I? Something that made me start having those nightmares in the first place.”

“Oh, hell, son, you didn’t just hear a scream. When you were seven, you walked in on me killing a woman.” His smile bloomed. “But I convinced you it was all just a dream.” He whistled. “You sure had a lot of bad dreams over the years.”

“My God.” Alina’s hand came up to her mouth. She feared that she might be sick right then and there.

“You do not have to be here,” Terrance said. He remained on her right side.

The warden had come to her left. “I can take you out,” he offered.

No, she could not leave Midas. She could see his fury, but beneath the rage on his face, she knew he had to feel so much pain. Midas had grown up with the monster across from him. No wonder he hadn’t wanted to come back for this faceoff.

But he came back for me. She knew that truth. Because of Bowie’s final words, Midas thought his father was involved in Alina’s abduction. He’d come back to face the pain of his past, for her.

She would not leave him.

The door creaked open behind them. “What did I miss?” Xander asked.

Chapter Eighteen

He would not let his father get to him. Henry’s words could have been a sick truth or a dirty lie. Either way, Midas had to stay focused. “Bowie Dodge mentioned you before he died.”

“You still haven’t said, did you kill him?”

“Why does it matter?”

His father sighed. “You didn’t. Still haven’t killed anyone, have you? If you had, I’d see it in your eyes. Such a disappointment.” He leaned forward. His shackles clinked. “One day, you will. After the first, there is no going back.”

“He’s supposed to tell Midas the location of the first victim.” Terrance shifted from his left foot to his right. “Ask him, Midas. Dammit, do it now. Stop playing his game.”

But Alina knew Midas wasn’t going to ask, not yet. He’s doing this for me.

He was trying to learn about Bowie. But Alina did not think that Henry was going to tell them anything useful. The man was just playing with them. Like a snake, toying with his prey.

She didn’t like Midas being that close to Henry.

Let’s leave. Midas. Let’s just go. Please.

“Bowie told me, and I quote, ‘Your father says hi.’” Midas slowly lowered back into his chair.

“Oh, I can assure you, I didn’t say ‘hi.’” A rolling laugh. “I would say something like… ‘Get your ass to the penitentiary. We need to talk.’ Or, ‘You twisted sonofabitch, you left me to rot.’” Another laugh. “Not a ‘hi.’ I mean, what am I? Some flirtatious teenage girl with a crush?”

Was that supposed to be funny? “Three women have been abducted in Colorado recently.” At least three. But until they had concrete evidence of the others, Midas was going to focus on the three victims that had been confirmed.

“Ooh.” Henry’s eyes widened with interest. “Do tell me more. Were they taken and murdered? Their poor, poor families.”
