“She found out what you were. You fought. You killed her.”

Henry raised his hands. “I’m a big guy. She was small. Always liked them small, you know. But you have to be careful. Small things break.”

You are a twisted bastard. “Did you just want me in this room so I’d have to listen to your bullshit? Because I have better things to do. If you aren’t telling me where my mother is, then—”

“What in the world made you think she was my first victim? Told you, she found out what I liked to do. She left us after that.”

Thud. Thud. Thud. “You will never tell me where she is.” Because his father liked pain and torture too much. He liked hurting Midas by keeping that information from him. Midas glanced at the one-way mirror. His reflection stared back at him.

But I just see my father. Every single time I look into any mirror, I just see him. He looked into a mirror and saw a monster staring back. Midas exhaled and stepped away from the table.

“Gonna pretend to walk away again?” Henry asked. “It’s getting tedious. Back and forth. Back and forth.”

Midas didn’t answer.

“Gonna try and pressure me? Think if you don’t respond, I’ll spill a secret?”

The deal had been that Henry talked in exchange for Midas’s presence. Midas had tried to tell Terrance that his father never kept his promises.

Midas didn’t look at his father again.

“Why aren’t you talking to me?” Henry blasted. “Midas, Midas, look at me!”

No, he wasn’t going to look. Midas knew the one thing his father hated. Being ignored. So Midas used that last ace that he held, and he ignored his father. Midas’s hand extended as he reached for the door.

“Ice Springs Road.”

Midas opened the door.

“Aspen, Colorado.”

He didn’t look back.

“She’s right there, beneath the most beautiful aspen tree you’ll ever see.”

Finally, Midas turned to stare back at his father. Henry had swiveled in his chair and was glaring at him. But Henry didn’t catch Midas’s attention. What actually caught his attention—

The one-way mirror appeared to be vibrating.

What in the hell?

As he watched, it trembled again.

Her fist drove into the one-way glass again. Again.

“Alina!” Terrance caught her hand. “What is wrong with you? What’s happening?”

Ice Springs Road. Aspen, Colorado. Her chest squeezed. No, it didn’t squeeze. It was like a giant weight had just crushed onto her heart. “I have to get in that room.” She yanked her hand from Terrance and ran for the door.

The warden blocked her path. “I think you need to relax. Something has upset you—”

“Get me in the room. Now.”

The warden looked over her shoulder. She knew he was eyeing Terrance and waiting for approval. He must have gotten it, because the warden turned around and opened the door. “Follow me.”
