My bastard of a father fixed it so I can never be with the woman I love. Ophelia hadn’t been spouting BS. He did love Alina.

“Stay away from Alina,” Bradford ordered yet again. “Don’t talk to her. Don’t try to explain. Don’t try to make things better. There is no making this better.”

Midas knew the last statement was true. There was nothing he could do to make this mess better.

“I will get a restraining order if I have to do so. You are clearly a violent individual. And, one who—I believe—has been stalking Alina. You are stalking her right now, aren’t you? That’s why you’re outside her rink. Unhealthy. Dangerous. You cannot be near her. Her father and I will not let you near her.”

Midas stared at the much smaller man. “You really think you could stop me from getting to Alina? You think a piece of paper would stop me?”

Bradford studied him. After a moment, some of the angry tension seemed to leave the lawyer’s body. “No, I don’t think I could physically stop you.” Lower. Grim. “And you might not give a damn about what some judge says, either. But…” He licked his lips. “I think you care about Alina. She doesn’t want to see you. She doesn’t want you in her life. You are just a reminder of pain. So how about you try to do what’s right for her? Stay. Away.” He spun around and headed for the rink.

Every muscle in Midas’s body had hardened. He wanted in that rink. He wanted Alina. He wanted—

For her not to hurt. For her not to hate me. For Alina to smile and be happy. I want…God, I want the past to have never happened.

His phone vibrated in his front pocket. Midas pulled it out. Not like he could ignore this caller. He put the phone to his ear. “Oliver.” He knew Oliver had been in North Dakota. Working once again with the Feds and the DA up there, he was trying to get Henry to reveal more about his vics. “Has he told you anything?”

“Not a damn thing, and that’s why I’m calling.”

Midas grunted. “He’s done sharing. It was all just a fuck-you to me.”

“He hasn’t mentioned you even once.”

“Because he’s done with his game.” Obviously.

“No, I don’t think so. Something else is happening. You’re not going to like this but…” Oliver stopped.

“Spit it out.” There was never anything involving his father that Midas did like.

“I want you here.”

Fuck that. “I’m not leaving Alina.” Hard no.

“You’re not with Alina,” Oliver threw back. “You think Ophelia hasn’t been updating me? And by the way, she saw you the first day. You can’t just hang outside of someone’s bedroom window.”

“I wasn’t—” He stopped. He’d been about thirty feet away from the house. Hardly hanging by the window. “Her bedroom is on the second floor. I’m not freaking Dracula. I wasn’t floating up there watching her.”

“Uh, huh. Whatever. Look, Ophelia just texted me. The detectives have closed the kidnapping case. There is jack and shit for them to go on. We need to push Henry.”

“Good luck with that.”

“I don’t need luck,” Oliver responded instantly. “I’ve got you.”

Oh, hell, no. “I’m not getting near him.”

“It’s like he’s waiting for something. I can all but see the guy vibrating with anticipation. He’s cocky and confident, and we have got to throw him off. That’s where you will come in. He’s not expecting you to come back. I want you with me when I—”

“First, the warden is not going to let me anywhere near Henry. Neither will the DA. And I don’t know what kind of FBI magic you think you’re working, but, dammit, you’re not even technically with the Bureau any longer—”

“Working on a contractual basis,” Oliver supplied, voice smooth. “The director and I understand each other.”

“Wonderful for you. Truly. But I’m not coming. I have other priorities.”

“Like keeping your eyes glued to Alina.”

His eyes weren’t glued to her. She was inside. And her lawyer had just threatened to slap him with a restraining order. “You ever want something so badly that you think about destroying the world to get it?”

A stark pause. Uncomfortable silence. Then, “Uh…Midas? That sounds like a statement your dad might make.”
