She pushed open the locker room door. “Alina!” Ophelia called. She didn’t hear the spray of the showers. “Alina, I have to tell you—” Ophelia broke off. Alina’s back was to her. Her friend—and, yeah, she thought of Alina as a friend and not just some client—had her arms curled around her stomach. “Alina, is everything okay?”

Alina slowly turned to face her. There were tear tracks on her face.

“Is there a threat?” Ophelia rushed to her. She locked her hands around Alina’s shoulders and hauled her close. “What’s happening?”

“Midas said he loved me.”

Ophelia’s eyes widened. He’d taken her advice?

“But he left before I could tell him that I love him, too.”

“You are not to touch the prisoner.”

Midas grunted.

“You are to remain two feet from him at all times.”

Another grunt.

“You are to let Oliver Foxx lead the questioning. You are not,” a vein bulged along Terrance’s temple, “to let Henry goad you into another attack. Not under any circumstances, do you understand me?” The DA was sweating.

“We have this,” Oliver assured him. “Midas is in full control.” He slapped a hand on Midas’s shoulder. “Aren’t you, buddy?”

No, he was not. He’d left Alina when all he wanted was to stay with her, forever. She hadn’t seemed to blame him for what his father had done. How could she be that way? So good? So warm? So…

Alina.

“He’s not responding.” Terrance began to pace around the small interrogation room. “I knew this was a mistake. My career is going straight down the shitter.”

Oliver’s hand gripped Midas’s shoulder as he applied some pressure. “You are in total control. Tell the man that his, uh, career isn’t going down the—his career is fine.”

“You’re fine, Terrance. I’m absolutely in control. Control is my middle name,” Midas returned. “And I can’t wait to see my dear old dad.”

“Jesus.” Terrance blew out a breath. “Jesus.”

The door opened. Terrance whipped around. A guard came in first. Then the prisoner.

“Why the hell did you drag me out of my cell this late at—” Henry stopped. Stopped speaking and walking as he gaped at Midas as he sat in the chair at the narrow table that had once again been placed in the middle of the room. Henry shook his head. “You aren’t supposed to be here.”

“We’ve contacted your lawyer,” Terrance informed him. “Xander will be here shortly. You don’t have to say anything until he arrives.”

“Fuck Xander. He’s useless. I’ll say what I want to say whenever I want.”

It was the response they’d all expected Henry to give.

Another guard crowded in behind Henry.

Yet Henry still did not move. His gaze remained locked on Midas.

Midas smiled at his father. “Those bruises have healed nicely, though I did learn that you lost a tooth.”

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“No? Where should I be?”

Henry shuffled forward as he lifted his bound hands. “You’re going to mess everything up.” Henry’s glinting glare swept to Oliver. “This your doing, FBI man? You screwing things because you think you know how to get under my skin?”
