Alina pushed against Milo. “Lower your weapon.”

He did. But he brought out a flashlight. Milo shone it toward the group on the ground.

Ophelia and Lane Lawson had a man pinned in the snow. The man raised his head.

Xander Palmer. Her mouth dropped when she saw the lawyer’s face.

“Midas had us looking for him! No way was he getting inside.” Lane heaved Xander to his feet. “I think there are some detectives who will want a word or two with you, buddy.”

“I just need to talk with Alina! Henry sent me with a message!” He fought Lane’s hold.

“Do you want me to tase you?” Ophelia asked. “Because I can. I will.”

“I’m an attorney! I’ve done nothing wrong. This is a public place. Let me go or I’ll have you both brought up on charges and you—”

They let him go. But they didn’t back up.

Milo still had his flashlight aimed at them.

“He wanted to apologize, Alina!” Xander stared at her. “Henry asked me to come here, to be face-to-face with you, and tell you how much he regrets his actions.”

A sound of disgust escaped Lane. “So you’re an errand boy for a serial killer? What a dream job. Lucky you.”

“If you will come talk to him, he’ll name more victims. That’s his offer. His way of atoning. He wanted me to come to you and tell you—”

“Do not come any closer.” Alina’s voice rang out, strong and clear. “I am not interested in any offer from Henry Monroe. And, this isn’t public property. It’s private. My father owns this facility. As a lawyer, you really should know better.” Her spine was ramrod straight. “Ophelia and Lane? I believe you mentioned something about detectives…?”

Xander backed away. “This is a mistake. I’m just relaying a message!”

“Message relayed. Stay away from me. Far away.”

He looked at Ophelia and Lane.

“I will tase you,” Ophelia said. “Give me a reason.”

“I’ll just knock your ass flat out,” Lane stated. “I don’t need a reason.”

Footsteps rushed behind Alina. “Is everything all right?” Dmitri demanded. “Alina?”

“Unwanted company is being sent away.” Her heart drummed. “And everything is fine. It’s time for me to skate.”

Accept an offer from Henry? Go see him in person?

Never.

Her skates cut across the ice. Faster and faster. The scene this morning had been chaos. The cops had arrived. The detectives had questioned Xander. They’d vanished with him.

Ophelia and Lane had vanished, too. Had they gone along for the questioning?

Her new guards had arrived. Two outside the front of the rink. Two stationed at the rear of the facility.

And she’d skated.

Dmitri had supervised. Been almost kind, in his way.

The lights around the rink were turned off. The only illumination fell on the ice itself. She skated faster and faster. They’d agreed not to attempt the quadruple. She hadn’t been able to land it no matter how hard she’d tried, and Dmitri feared she’d injure herself if they trained too long with it.
