But they didn’t move. “Mr. Wells specifically told us that you weren’t to be allowed inside. You’re on the list, Mr. Midas.”

So they recognized him?

“Saw you on the news recently,” the smaller of the two guards said. “You, ah, did a great job saving Alina.” He had short, spiky, brown hair. “But we can’t let you in. Orders are orders.”

New guards. He’d already been briefed by Ophelia on the scuffle that had gone down this morning. Xander was here. And he was currently answering questions at the PD. Midas knew he should go there, but he had a desperate need to put his eyes on Alina. To make sure for himself that she was all right. He’d tried texting her several times, but she hadn’t responded.

Probably because she is practicing. Alina doesn’t have her phone on when she’s practicing.

Memphis was currently at the police station with Ophelia and Lane. Midas would join up with them soon, but first…I need to see Alina.

“We don’t want to have to get physical,” the taller guard warned. Bright green eyes. A too-tough swagger. And he’d really sounded like he did want to get physical.

Midas smiled. “I would love to see you try.”

“Don’t, Drew,” the smaller guy urged. “You do not want to tackle him.”

“I’m going to see, Alina,” Midas said. “You guys can either open the door for me, or I’ll be opening it myself in about twenty seconds while you are groaning on the ground.” After the talk with his father…

I need to see her.

“You’re the one who will be on the ground,” the one who’d been tagged as Drew retorted.

“He will wreck you, man,” the smarter bodyguard warned his partner. “Let’s just let him see her. Ten minutes. What will it hurt?”

“Are you trying to get us fired, Chip? You heard Mr. Wells! He went in like five minutes ago, and he specifically said that no one was to get inside. He warned us. I am not losing my job over this shit!” Drew puffed out his chest. “No one is getting inside.”

So…Bradford was in there.

Midas turned and surveyed the lot. He didn’t see the lawyer’s normal ride. “Why is he here?” And something nagged at him.

His damn freak of a father and all the BS he’d said during both of their meetings…

Truth or lies? With Henry, it was always so hard to be sure what was real. But Midas did remember Henry saying…

“Lawyers, am I right? You can’t trust them.”

And…there had a been a witness to the attack on Alina’s mother. At least, according to Henry, there had been. But again, truth or lies? If Henry had been telling the truth…If…

Someone had seen the attack but not reported it.

And someone had been in contact with Henry for a long time.

And…Henry said we’d met the witness. Me and Alina…

Henry had been specific about that. Certain.

“It’s none of your damn business what Mr. Wells is doing! Now I told you to get out of here!” Drew shoved Midas in the back.

Midas didn’t so much as stumble. Bad mistake, new guard. Bad. He turned. Smiled. “Do it again.” A dare.

The fool did.

“It’s all right, Alina.” A whisper in her ear. “It’s only going to hurt you for a moment. Just a brief moment.” He spun her to face him.

Alina found herself staring up at Bradford Wells.
