The driver flashed on his lights. And in the beam of those headlights, she saw the slumped figure of a man as he lay sprawled on the road.

The abductor beside her started laughing. Deep, bellowing laughs.

But that laughter stopped when Midas began to rise.

“Holy fucking shit,” he gasped as the laughter died. “Who the hell is your boyfriend?”

Midas rolled back his shoulders. And started walking toward the vehicle. The bright headlights illuminated him fully, and as she took in his determined march, wild hope blossomed in Alina. Midas was okay. He could help her.

“Hit him again!” the man next to her yelled.

“What if he jumps on my fucking ride again?”

Ah…he’d done that?

“Screw this,” the driver snarled. The car whipped into reverse, then it spun around and took off in the opposite direction, leaving Midas behind them. She turned her head and tried to see him.

Darkness.

Getting thicker and thicker in their wake. But she could have sworn that—is Midas running after me?

Laughter came once again. “Yeah, bastard, you try running,” the man beside her muttered. “Don’t think you can keep up with a freaking car.”

Tears trickled down her cheeks.

He grabbed her chin. “He won’t find you. No one will.”

The car turned left, and the engine howled as it raced away.

“Sonofabitch.” The headlights had vanished. Midas stood in the middle of the dark road. Every muscle in his body screamed with pain. His breath heaved in and out. Alina had been taken. On his watch. Oh, the hell, no. That shit should never, ever have happened.

He yanked out his phone. A long crack ran the length of the screen.

Alina has to be scared. Screw that. She would be terrified. And if she’d been hurt…

His nostrils flared and he ground his teeth together as he waited for the damn phone call to be answered. Pick up, you bastard. Pick—

“I told you already that your work for the night was done,” Ryker snapped. “Why are you calling—”

“Someone just abducted your daughter, that’s what I’m calling about,” he snarled right back.

Ryker sucked in a shocked breath. “Wh-what?”

“Abducted your daughter.” He turned away from the dark street and raced back for his own ride. “Two men. Black Mercedes SUV. They went into her home. Took her out of the back door. They took her. I’m giving chase, and I’m going to need you to call the police.” Hell, he could call the police while he chased the SOBs. But he’d felt like the dad needed a freaking heads-up.

Heads-up. Two soon-to-be-dead pieces of shit took Alina. But I have a plan.

“No police!” A fast and hard denial from Ryker.

Midas’s steps stumbled. “What? You are not serious right now.” Maybe the man was in shock. Midas double-timed his already fast pace. “Alina was taken. We need the cops. We need—”

“Are you going after them?”

Midas didn’t go back into her house. Just rushed around it in order to get to his car.

“Can you get her back? Please? I am begging you…can you get her back?”
