“And that’s what you usually do? Work undercover? Pretend to be someone you’re not?”

They were both running on fumes. Maybe this talk should wait. “You’re exhausted.”

“Yes.”

“Terrified.”

“Terror does keep clawing through me, absolutely.” She stopped gripping the banister and instead wrapped her arms around her stomach. “But I also think I deserve some answers.”

“Fair enough.” He kept his hands loose at his sides. “I don’t usually work this way, no. My clients typically know exactly who I am and what my job is—makes things easier that way.” So you’re not say, sitting in a car outside when your charge gets abducted on day freaking one.

She swallowed. “Typically?”

“You’re the first who didn’t know what I was doing. Got to tell you, it was a real pain in my ass.”

Alina flinched.

Yep, that had not been the right thing to say. “You aren’t a pain in my ass. The job is,” Midas clarified.

She sucked in a breath. And turned to rush up the stairs.

Hell. “Alina!” He gave chase. Caught her at the top. He didn’t spin her around. He just scooped her into his arms.

“Stop it! Put me down!”

Yes, again, not the right thing. Holding her was not right. So he put her down in front of the bedroom that she’d chosen for the night—or day. Or… “Dammit.” He blew out a hard breath. “I wanted to tell you, okay? I warned your old man that this was a terrible idea. I can’t work with my hands tied.”

“Your hands are currently on me.”

Yes, they were. Stroking her shoulders. Whoops. “My bad.”

“They are still on me.”

Once again, yes. He pulled them away. “Your dad wanted you focused on your skating. He thought if you knew you had a bodyguard watching your every move, it would make you nervous.” Like she didn’t have cause to be nervous…

Her chin lifted. “Who had the idea that you should pretend to be interested in me?”

Oh, yeah. He could see the landmine in front of him just waiting to explode. “You need rest.”

“I need some answers. My body won’t stop shaking. I’m afraid someone is going to come rushing in the door and attack me any moment, and I just found out that you lied to me from the moment we met.” Her lips pressed together. Then, “Rest is not exactly going to come easily.”

“You probably have too much adrenaline coursing through your blood.” Midas tried to make his voice sound soothing. A hard feat because he typically sounded like a growling bear and growling bears were not soothing. “You’ll feel a crash soon, and you’ll be out like a light.”

She stepped closer. “Did you have the idea to fake being interested in me?”

Her scent teased him. She’d showered, and her hair was still wet, and she smelled like that sweet, sweet vanilla cream again. Good enough to eat.

And he wanted a bite.

So not the time. But his dick never listened to reason. And his dick couldn’t tell time for shit.

“Was it your idea or did my father tell you what cover to use?”

He whipped his gaze off her delectable lips. “He mentioned that you were sheltered. That you didn’t have a lot of experience with men and—”

Her face flamed.

His back teeth ground together. “I’m shit with words sometimes.”
