“Then you might want to reach out to him.” He watched as the two detectives—Joyce Meriam and Calvin Booker—opened the building’s rear door and stared around. Zero surprise showed on their faces when they noticed the reporters. Like it was hard to figure out who’d tipped them off. “The story will also be airing on the news. Thought you might want to be aware of the situation. I’ll handle as much as I can on this end, but you’ll want to pull in your PR team, too.” STAT.

“The abduction made it to the news? How?”

“I suspect it’s due to the two smug-looking detectives I’m watching. Now, unfortunately, the reporters are coming my way, so I have to go. Damage control, you know.”

“Where is my daughter?”

Ryker would hate this but… “The last time I saw her, she was on the back of a motorcycle and holding tight to her bodyguard.”

“What?”

“Maybe consider firing him and bringing in someone new? Someone who will actually follow your orders so that Alina can stay alive? That’s some helpful advice from your attorney.” He hung up. The reporters had closed in on him.

“Bradford Wells,” a woman with stylishly cut, dark hair lasered in on him. He was hardly surprised to be recognized by the press. The surprise would have been them not recognizing him. “Is it true that Alina Bellamy was abducted last night? Is someone trying to stop her from competing in the Olympics?”

Competition had nothing to do with this case. The detectives thought ransom was the motive. That it was about cold, hard cash. Wasn’t it usually?

He opened his mouth to reply, but then felt a sudden awareness pulse at the back of his neck. His head turned. A stranger stood a few feet away. The man who’d gotten off the motorcycle. His arms were crossed over his chest as he leaned against the back of the building. His eyes were on Bradford. A direct, intense gaze.

Then that stare moved to the reporters.

Then to the whispering detectives.

Bradford had encountered all sorts of people during his days practicing law. When he’d first started, he’d gone into criminal law. Had even handled several homicide cases before deciding that he was much better suited for corporate law. If you lost a case in corporate law, your client would lose a ton of money.

But not his life.

Yes, he’d handled all sorts of cases over the years. Met all kinds of people. Some of those people had been very, very dangerous. So he knew a hunter when he saw one.

The stranger who’d come to help Midas Monroe was definitely a hunter.

But that only seemed fitting, considering that Bradford knew Midas was exactly the same. A modern-day hunter. A predator straight to his core.

And that predator had just vanished with Alina.

Chapter Thirteen

The motorcycle braked to a halt. For a moment, Alina didn’t move. During the drive, she’d closed her eyes because there had been more than a few turns that threatened to give her a heart attack. She’d closed her eyes and gripped him as tightly as she could. The result was that her body was plastered to his.

This had been her first time on a motorcycle. No doubt Midas probably enjoyed those adrenaline-inducing rides all the time. Meanwhile, Alina was pretty sure that when she got off the bike, her body would collapse in a quivering pile. She could still feel the vibrations rolling through her.

“We’re here, sweetheart,” Midas told her. “All safe and sound.”

She pushed away from him and looked around. With shaking hands, she pulled off the helmet. He hadn’t worn a helmet. That seemed crazy dangerous to her. She’d scooted back as she tried to take in the scene around her. Midas kicked down the stand and climbed from the bike. He turned back to her. Offered his hand.

He’d done that before. Behind the building, when the reporters had been surging toward them, he’d extended his hand to her. Even though she’d been afraid of the bike, she’d taken his hand because she wasn’t afraid of Midas.

There were plenty of things she did fear in this world, but he wasn’t one of them.

So, once more, she took his hand. He helped her off the bike. He’d parked it inside of a garage, and as they walked forward, he hit a button on the wall and the garage door lowered behind them.

Then they were heading through a well-lit hallway. Midas unlocked a door. Typed in a code on a security panel. Took them inside what turned out to be an enormous house.

One with a view of the mountains that was even better than the one her father had. “Where are we?” Alina asked as she looked around in confusion.

“Your new safe house.”

Her head whipped back toward him. “Say again?”
