“You’re not gonna like it,” Memphis muttered.

“Who the hell cares? Just say it—”

“Fallon’s older brother is in the same penitentiary that houses your father. In fact, they were briefly in the same cell.”

Midas felt every muscle in his body stiffen. Not possible. What he was saying…the idea that Midas was getting in his mind… “My dad isn’t involved in this.”

Memphis just stared at him.

“My father is locked away! Maximum security!”

“Just like Fallon’s older brother,” Memphis agreed.

“My father isn’t—” But he stopped.

“I believe Fallon was found with a broken neck,” Memphis murmured. “And with a knife plunged into his heart. Pretty sure we are all familiar with that particular MO.”

Henry Monroe smiled as he stared through his window. It had been so long since he’d seen his son. Granted, the last time they had been touching-close…

I used my knife on him.

But that was only because he’d been so angry with Midas. The man could be such a disappointment sometimes.

Enough was enough, though. Henry had come to that decision weeks ago.

His smile spread. He was sure that, by this time tomorrow, he’d be sitting down with his son for a wonderful face-to-face chat. Quality time was so important for a family.

They really had quite a bit of catching up to do.

Chapter Fourteen

“You gave Ryker Bellany my name,” Midas said as he gripped his phone tightly and paced in the bedroom. He’d left the others. He knew Memphis wouldn’t let Alina leave the house.

This can’t be happening.

“Uh, hello, to you, too, Midas,” Oliver Foxx returned. “I’m enjoying my honeymoon, thanks so much for asking. I’m good and you are—”

“Lane said you didn’t know a damn thing about the case. Ryker Bellany told me that you referred him to me for bodyguard services.” He didn’t have time for BS small talk. “What is happening?”

“I don’t know.” All humor vanished from Oliver’s voice. “But I do wish I wasn’t five thousand miles away because I don’t like where this is going.” A pause. Midas could have sworn he heard the roar of waves in the background. Probably because Oliver was on a sunny beach. “Look, I don’t know how long I’ll have service out here but understand this…I have never talked to Ryker Bellamy. I don’t even know who the hell he is.”

The twisting knots in Midas’s stomach grew worse. “I’m protecting his daughter.”

“The one who was abducted last night? Lane told me about that, and I’m glad you were there—”

“I was there because someone wanted me to be.” And it couldn’t be…no way could it be…

He shut down the thought.

“Go talk to Ryker,” Oliver suggested. “Find out why the hell he told you I was the one to recommend you.”

Oh, he planned to talk to Ryker. Immediately.

“And watch your back, man.” The ocean roared. “Because I’m feeling like you are a piece on a chessboard, and someone is moving you around in a game you didn’t know you were playing.”
