Alina thought the man made an excellent point. “Uh, Midas…”

He remained focused on the guard. “Tell her that Alina Bellamy is out front. Take out your phone. Call inside. Tell Kiera. Tell her that Alina Bellamy was abducted last night and that her two abductors are dead.”

The man hesitated. His blue gaze swung back to Alina.

“Tell her,” Midas repeated. “And if she says for you to kick us off the property, then I will turn right around without you needing to pull out that gun that you have strapped beneath your coat.”

She’d feared the man might have a weapon.

But he was pulling out his phone. Making a phone call and… “Bowie? Got two people out here who say that Ms. Kiera wants to see them.” The black spiderweb tattoo on the back of his hand flexed. “Woman says she was abducted last night. Her name is—” He squinted at Alina. “Who the hell are you again?”

“Alina Bellamy,” Midas said softly.

“Alina B—” He stopped. “Yeah, yeah, okay. I’ll send them in.” He shoved the phone back into his pocket. “You can go in. Bowie said Ms. Kiera will see you.”

“Is Bowie another bodyguard?” Alina asked.

The man’s head jerked in agreement.

Midas killed the engine, and they exited the ride, but before they could approach the house, the man with the spiderweb tats—tats that Alina had noticed covered the backs of both his hands—had moved into their path. “Got to pat you down first. No one gets near her without being cleared by me.”

Midas lifted his hands. “You certainly take security very seriously here.”

The man started patting him down. And he pulled out a knife—two knives—that Midas had been carrying. One had been under Midas’s shirt, hooked onto his belt. Another had been in a sheath around his ankle.

The man also took Midas’s phone. Then he turned to Alina.

“Keep the hands only where they need to be,” Midas warned him. “And we won’t have a problem.”

Grunting, the guy patted her down. Quickly. Impersonally. Then he took her phone. “Can’t have phones inside. Ms. Kiera doesn’t want anyone recording her.”

Alina peered at the double doors that led into the house.

“Nice tats,” she heard Midas say.

“Thanks.”

“Where’d you get them?”

The man didn’t answer. One of the double doors had opened. A dark-haired male in a black t-shirt and jeans stood in the doorway. Muscled, but not close to Midas’s scale. Sharp eyes. Hard jaw. His assessing stare swept over them both. “You checked them for weapons, Ray?”

“Yeah, they’re clear. Now.”

He nodded and waved them inside. “You have ten minutes.”

Chapter Fifteen

Alina went in first, with Midas at her heels.

“I’m Bowie, one of Kiera’s bodyguards.” He shut the door behind them. Locked it. Then briefly looked at his watch. “She can’t be stressed. Do not stress her, understand? Answer her questions, then get the hell out.”

“The friendly welcome is overwhelming. You’re a ray of sunshine,” Midas returned.

“No, Midas, I’m not.” the man said, surprising her because Midas had not given his name to anyone. But, clearly, this guy recognized him. “I’m just a bodyguard, same as you, trying to protect my client.”

Midas raised his brows. “You know me? Should I be flattered?”

Bowie hurried into the den. “You should be faster. Time is ticking.” Then he looked over his shoulder. “And after the news story I saw this morning—with you featured prominently as both hero and potential killer—I think everyone is going to know your face soon.”
