“Did you see the boss?” Midas continued to use his careful voice. One that wasn’t exactly soft. Alina didn’t think his voice could ever be called soft. But it was oddly gentle.

A tear slid down Kiera’s cheek. “The men who took you—what did they look like? The news didn’t show photos.”

“One had red hair.”

Another flinch from Kiera. “I could…see his hair. Poking out from beneath the black cap he wore.” Her right hand rose to touch her head. “Ski cap. Ski mask, too. He seemed…kinder than the other one. He tried to stop his partner from cutting me.”

“I’ve learned that you were missing for three days.” Midas shifted his position slightly.

Bowie stiffened. “Who the hell told you that?”

Midas didn’t glance his way. “Where were you during that time?”

“In the closet. It was so dark.” She looked around. “Bowie keeps the lights on for me.”

Bowie’s lips thinned. “Yeah, I do.”

Kiera exhaled slowly. “I’m glad they are dead.” She focused back on Alina. “Is that wrong?” She shook her head. “Don’t answer.”

Alina leaned forward. Right or wrong, this nightmare wasn’t over yet. “The boss is still out there.”

A shudder shook Kiera’s slender form.

“He was coming that very night to see me,” Alina told the other woman. “Is that what he did with you, too? Came the first night that you were taken?”

Kiera’s body rocked forward, then back.

A low whistle escaped Midas. “You saw him, didn’t you?”

“Mask,” Kiera bit out. Her eyes squeezed shut. “Always wore a mask.” Her hands went to her throat. “So easy to snap.”

Horror roared through Alina. She knew the boss had threatened to break Kiera’s neck. Maybe he’d put his hands on her throat. Had teased her with the pain he could give.

Kiera’s hand trailed down her chest. Rested over her heart. “Just a nick.”

Oh, God. “Do you have more scars, Kiera?”

Her eyes opened. “I think he liked hurting me. But my father paid the money. Sent it to the offshore account just like he was ordered to do. The boss said it wasn’t enough vengeance, but it was a start. He said—”

“Time’s up,” Bowie announced.

“Screw that,” Midas fired right back. “Kiera is talking to us. She wants to help us.” He took a step forward. “Don’t you, Kiera?”

Kiera jumped to her feet.

“Tell us everything you remember about the boss,” Midas told her. “We’ll find him. We’ll stop him. Then you won’t need to be afraid any longer. You won’t have to keep every light on because he will never come for you again.”

So Midas had noticed the lights, too.

Kiera’s head moved in a fast nod. “I-I want him stopped. I want—”

“There are two of them, Midas,” Bowie said suddenly as his voice cracked like a whip. “You can’t protect them both. Alina or Kiera. You have to choose. Bet I know who you’ll pick.”

Alina’s stunned stare flew to him. Bowie had pulled a gun from behind his body. He had it aimed at Alina. He smiled at her.

“What the hell are you doing?” Midas thundered.

“My job.” Bowie swung his hand a bit, and the gun pointed at a frozen Kiera. “You should have just stayed silent. But you got brave when you heard her story, didn’t you?” Then he swung the gun back to Alina. “Two women. Honestly, I think I can take them both out before you can get to me, Midas. I am that fast. Good thing I made sure you didn’t have any weapons before coming inside, huh, hero?”
