“You’re threatening to spank my girl? To hurt her? Harm her?”

She swallowed heavily, moving so she could look from Loki to Remy. Loki appeared outraged, but to her surprise Remy just seemed contemplative.

Loki stared down at her with a frown, looking like he was going to push her behind him again.

“Loki, he wasn’t threatening me.” She checked him over; he didn’t appear injured. Just tired and rumpled.

Thank God.

She sighed with relief. Maybe she should have stayed around and waited for him. She’d felt terrible about leaving him.

“Are you all right?” she asked. “I’m sorry I left. I tried to get to you. What did Gary do or say this time?”

Gary and his friends were a blight in an otherwise lovely town. Well, mostly lovely.

“What he said doesn’t matter. He’s a fucking pig.”

Isa winced. She could guess what Gary had said. There was one way to rile Loki up. Insult her. “It was about me, wasn’t it? He said something rude about me and you were defending me.”

“Is that right?” Remy asked in a low voice. “He said something about Isa?”

“Yeah,” Loki said with a scowl. “But I can handle fucking Gary. What I want to know is what you meant when you said you’d spank my girl? I am not going to let you harm her.”

“Remy wouldn’t hurt me, Loki. It was . . . I asked him to do it.” She could feel herself growing red. This was freaking embarrassing, but she had to tell Loki the truth.

“I asked him to spank me because I thought . . . I thought it might make me feel better.”

“Make you feel better?”

“About what I did . . . I feel guilty for not telling you the truth, Loki. It wasn’t that I was trying to lie to you or anything. I promise I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I don’t want you to be angry at me.”

She could feel the tears forming again.

God. Stupid tears. Where did they keep coming from?

“I just thought . . . in those books I read a spanking wipes the slate clean. You know? You do something wrong, you’re punished and all is forgiven. But real life isn’t a book, right?”

“Some parts can be,” Remy told her. “A punishment can work that way. You break the rules, you’re punished, you’re forgiven and it’s forgotten. Maybe not forgotten. If it happens again, another punishment will be given that’s harder.”

“It never worked like that for me growing up. Whenever my dad would punish me, he’d still keep bringing up what I did over and over.”

“Your dad is a fucking asshole,” Loki said angrily. “He had no right to make you feel that way.”

“And we wouldn’t do that, would we, Loki?” Remy asked.

Loki stared at Remy in shock. In much the same way as she was doing.

“Never,” Loki swore. “I’d never treat Isa that way.”

“It wasn’t fair of me to ask Remy to punish me, though. When . . . when I wronged you.” She glanced up at Loki. “I’m sorry.”

“Tinkerbelle.” There was real pain in Loki’s face as he picked her up to wrap her in his arms. “Have you got glitter in your belly?”

“Uh-huh,” she said, snuggling into him. “Real bad.”

“You don’t need to. You and me . . . we’re always gonna be okay. Yeah?” He walked her over to the island, setting her down. Much as Remy had earlier.

He stared down at her. “I was a bit upset that you didn’t tell me everything, but I also get you were trying to protect me. However, it’s not your job to protect me. It’s the other way around. Got it? Don’t keep things from me again.”
