“Um, yep.”

“Where?” he asked.

“In the hallway closet.”

She watched him as he walked down and grabbed a pillow as well as a blanket and moved back to the sofa, setting them down.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Making a bed. I could sleep on the floor if you’d rather.”

“Wouldn’t you prefer to go home?” she asked even though her body wanted her to tell him to sleep with her.

Urgh. Stupid body.

“Yeah, but you need to go to bed now.”

What did that have to do with anything?

“I’m not hauling you out to my place.”

Oh. Um. He thought he would be taking her with him?

“No, I meant, leave me here and, um, you go there,” she said.

“Not happening. You were in a car accident and . . .”

“And what?” she asked when he didn’t say anything more.

“Nothing. Bed.” He pointed at her bedroom.

She frowned, then huffed out a breath and thought about arguing. But the truth was, all she really wanted was to sleep. So she’d be arguing for the sake of it, which seemed kind of dumb.

There was one thing, though.

“I don’t really know you. I mean, well enough for you to, uh, stay over.”

He eyed her as he sat on the sofa. “I’d never harm you, baby. I’d never harm any woman. But especially not you.”

“Why especially not me? I mean, I kind of got the impression you, uh, didn’t think that much of me.”

“Did you?” was all he said.

Grr.

If she asked anything more, it would be like she was fishing for compliments.

When, really, all she wanted was . . . okay, it was compliments.

Was there anything wrong with that? Everyone liked to hear nice things about themselves, right? She liked giving people compliments and making them smile.

“Just want to stay and make sure you’re all right. Scout’s honor.”

“You weren’t a scout.”

“Wasn’t I?” He lay back on the sofa.

Guilt filled her. He was going to be so uncomfortable on that sofa. It was far too short for him. But she couldn’t offer him Loki’s bed. He had a thing about people in his room.
