“You’re telling me. I think I almost died.”

“Why do you say that?”

“I saw Rory. We spoke.”

“What did he say?”

“Basically, he told me to move on and live my life. He called Jonathan a Boy Scout but said he liked him.”

“Listen to him, Kierra. You have a lot of good things happening in your life to look forward to, like being my Maid of Honor and planning my baby shower.”

“When are y’all getting married? I don’t remember receiving a wedding invitation in the mail.”

Simone shrugged. “We originally agreed on late December, but December is coming quicker than expected. Anthony wants to make a big to-do about it with wedding dresses and tuxedos, but I rather go to the courthouse in my Sunday Best.”

“Just tell him you can’t wait to become Mrs. Anthony Powell, and he’ll run to the courthouse.”

“You’re diabolical, Kierra.”

“You’re really gonna see the Devil in a few minutes if I don’t get some fucking drugs,” I complained as I repeatedly clicked the nurse call button.

Chapter Forty-Three

Jonathan

“Mr. Jonathan, are we almost there?” Kiyah asked from the back seat.

“Just a few more minutes, Ki.”

“I miss my mommy,” she mumbled.

“I know you do. She misses you, too.”

Fuck. I miss her too.

“Mommy’s hurt.”

“She is, but the doctors fixed her, and she’ll be coming home tomorrow.”

“Thank you.”

My brows raised, and I met her intense gaze in the rearview mirror.

“For what?”

“You know,” she insisted, tears welling in her eyes. I pulled over in the post office parking lot when she started bawling in the backseat. I unbuckled her and pulled her out of her car seat into a comforting hug.

“Your mom’s gonna be all right.”

She shook her head on my shoulder. “I…I like your house, Mr. Jonathan, but I want my daddy. He’s dead, and he’s never coming back,” she cried.

For once, I didn’t know what to say. What the fuck do you say to that? Emotionally, I was spent, and physically I was exhausted. I couldn’t offer her much, no matter how hard I tried.

“Sing the song to me, Kiyah. The one your dad taught you.”

We rocked in the parking lot as Kiyah sang about Old McDonald’s garage and all the vehicles. She eventually stopped crying, and we continued to cling to each other.

“I heard you crying this morning. You can sing that song when you’re sad, too.”
