“I agree with you, but we won’t test the waters. The next thing I know, your stitches are busted.”

“I love it when you talk dirty to me.”

I grinned. “Oh, yeah? You like that?”

“Mhm,” she confirmed, searching for my lips. I put her out of her misery and softly caressed her lips with mine.

“Oh, no. Don’t go. I need some more,” she groaned once I pulled away.

“You’ve had enough.”

“That kiss was Rated G. I need Rated R.”

“Rated R gets you pregnant.”

She smiled lightly and eased against the pillows. “You’re right, Jon. I have a question.”

“Shoot.”

“Will I be able to join everyone for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow?”

“That should be okay as long as you stay in bed today,” I confirmed, grabbing her prescription bag off the dresser.

“Can I be honest, Jon?” she asked while I read the dosage.

“Always,” I mumbled, distracted by the milligrams.

I’m no doctor, but this seems a little high.

“I’m a little bummed that Kiyah is still avoiding me.”

My head snapped up and my gaze met hers. “I’m sorry, baby. Do you want me to talk to her?”

“No,” she sighed. “I’m sure she’ll come around eventually when I’m back on my feet and not looking like I was mauled by a bear. I just wanted to get it off my chest and share how I feel. I miss her.”

Unlike Kiyah, my children had to be corralled out of Kierra’s bedroom several times. Even Nori was signing that Kierra was hurt and asked if she was okay.

“Don’t feel bad,” I encouraged, tapping two of the pills into her open palm. “I didn’t mention it, but she had a moment on the way to the hospital. She was crying for Rory. In hindsight, I probably should’ve taken her home instead of the hospital.”

“Don’t beat yourself up. Thanks for letting me know. She has an appointment with her therapist scheduled in December,” she said, accepting a glass of water.

“Do you think you need to check in with your therapist?”

“I should be asking you that question.”

“Me?” I asked in disbelief.

“You’ve had a lot of life changes thrown at you in such a short time frame—divorce, single parenthood, new partner, bonus kiddo, baby mama drama, injured partner, the holidays, and pending custody hearing. You should check in with someone.”

I heaved a sigh and ran my fingers through my hair in frustration. “I have been a little…frazzled,” I admitted. “But currently, I don’t have the time.”

“You have the time, Jon. You just have to make the time.”

“Those drugs haven’t kicked in yet?” I teased.

“It’s not that fast. Go spend time with everyone; I’ll be fine.”

I turned on a British murder mystery for her and wasn’t shocked that she was drifting off before I left the bedroom.
