“I’m sorry. I don’t think I heard you correctly. Can you repeat that?”

“I found out I was pregnant in the hospital.”

“Have you already seen an OB/GYN?” She nodded reluctantly. “How far along are you?”

“Eight weeks,” she replied cautiously. “Are you mad? I wanted to tell you, but a lot was going on, and you were already stressed. I wanted to wait until after the custody hearing, but the situation changed so….”

“Mad isn’t the word I’m looking for.”

“Disappointed?” Anthony offered.

“Bamboozled?” Dad said.

I wasn’t mad. Truly, I wasn’t. Slightly annoyed…perhaps because I would’ve wanted to be there every step of the way; however, knowing I had another child on the way with Eliza running rampant would’ve put me on high alert. If she hadn’t swallowed those pills herself, I would’ve had to take desperate measures.

I won’t say what those matters are, but I’d be damned if I lost Kierra, Kiyah, and the little one.

“I feel like an idiot.”

“Jon, I’m—”

“No, it’s because I get it now. When you said the proposal was the greatest gift you’ve received besides your children, you meant Kiyah and the baby.”

“You are an idiot because I mean Grant, Casey, and Daisy, too.”

“When’s your next appointment?”

“A few weeks from now. I’ll send you a calendar invite.”

“I’ll be there,” I confirmed. The doorbell rang. “Can you go grab the door, Kierra?”

“Um…sure.”

She left, and my father handed me a cigar. “I was saving this for later, but I guess you need it more than me. Congratulations, I suppose.”

“Thank you, I suppose,” I replied, accepting his gift, when suddenly a scream echoed from the foyer.

Chapter Fifty-Five

Kierra

The doorbell rang again.

“I’m coming!” I shouted, approaching the door. I checked the video monitor first because the last thing I wanted was to open the door to one of Eliza’s crazy ass family members looking to start shit on the other side.

That’s okay. They can act a fool if they want to. I’ll call Pistol Pete, aka Marcus, over here to handle business.

I screamed, and my heart seized in my chest—pausing for a prolonged moment before pounding back to life. I became lightheaded and had to brace myself against the wall. Dark spots clouded my vision, and if it weren’t for Jonathan arriving and reminding me to breathe, then I would’ve hyperventilated and passed out.

“Y-you brought them?” I asked in disbelief.

“I did. You intended for us to meet your family for Christmas, and I made it happen. I know you’re from Colorado, but how long will you leave them in the cold?”

“I don’t know what to say,” I whispered, wiping away the tears from my face. It was then I realized my hands were trembling.

“It’s okay to not say anything. They’re not mad at you, Kierra. They want to see their daughter again, meet their grandchild, and offer their condolences. You were 18 and in love; I’ve been there, and I like to blame my decisions on my underdeveloped brain.”

I laughed through my tears. “Of course you would.”
